Why should we help the poor?

First, i'm not rich, and neither are my parents, I'm 23 and bust my *** working to pay my mortgage. my parents were immigrants who came to the u.s. with their shirts on their backs. They worked hard and made it into the middle class without ever collecting welfare. If my (poor) family pulled through w/o welfare why cant all the others do the same? after all, generally all (poor) people are afforded the same opportunities to Excel.

Update:

so we should pay/encourage them to stay poor by giving them tax money? Why work hard when you can get it for free?

jaded to keep pulling their own weight and also some other person(s_)

who don't fand won't work to support their family..what is with this?

Is it that bad to help. I mean I understand that youve made it on your own and I gotta give you a lot of credit for that. I know how you feel. Trust me, I had once thought of why not just kill all the poor people, I mean theyre worthless and dont even contribute to the society, they just rob and rob and whine and whine about the government, Theyre poor and most likely their children will also grow poor and bear children who would also be poor, It never stops. I used to hate them all until one day I went out on an outreach program implemented by my school. I really didnt wanna go but I didnt have any choice. I came across this kid, They were 9 in the family. His father doesnt have a job and so does her mom who is sick of whatever sickness that is, I dunno. They cant go to school because they have to work on the streets selling candies and cigarettes only to buy just enough rice to feed their family at the end of the day. I had the chance to talk to some of them. One of them said that he just wanted to go to school. My point is that Not all people are given the same opportunities bro, theyre only given the same problem dictated by the world and unlike some who are able to break from the side of poverty, some couldnt because of they have no choice and can you blame them entirely? No you cant. These kids are paying the price for what their parents had done. Nothing pisses me off more when I see someone begging, knocking on the window of my car and then finding out that he doesnt have any job and that he has 6 sons, 12 sons, 7 sons, etc. WHatever. Does he mean to tell me that their lives were any better when they only had 2 sons or 4 or 4? No. But still he goes on and makes more. Thats just stupidity. The children are innocent but damn the father, damn the mother. Who would help these kids if their parents wont? Who would help these kids if they cant even help themselves? We did this to them and they did this to us. There will always be rich and poor and even if you take out the poor entirely, the richest of the richest will only be the rich and the rich will now be the poor. They will always co exist. Of course I would be pissed to see someone, just sitting around earning dollars taken from my money but its not the only way we could help.

Some people have severe health problems not caused by themselves (meaning no cigarettes, no drugs, no alcohol) and have no way to afford health care or even work. Some are disabled. Some live in rural areas don't even have a car or running water. (Right outside Chicago!) Sometimes they have a relative take care of them instead of going off to the big city and that relative thereby remains poor.

Some people have been taught they're worthless from a very young age and therefore see themselves as worthless/failure and always end up in dead end jobs. They work hard but the minimum can't pay rent or put food on the table when you're single.

Hope this helps you see that you are very fortunate. Free your mind. See beyond the scope of what your situation is. Not everyone has an able body to be able to go work. Not everyone has working legs. Not everyone has running water or the ability to remedy their problem without outside help. And not everybody has your spirit. Some people's spirit is broken and that keeps their mind in a state of despair where you can't get out and their physical energy levels too low to help them function.

If your statement were correct, you'd have a point, but it isn't.

Sadly, not 'all' are afforded the same opportunities, and not 'all' are able to dig themselves out from under.

I too am not 'rich', but I do ok, and I'd be considered 'rich' by a lot of people less fortunate than myself, and therefore, I'm happy to help them. And if that means that I pay an extra 3% in taxes, then I pay it. If you have extra to give, you give it. If you are in need, what's wrong with accepting a little help. I do not agree with people who abuse this type of situation, but I do know people who have needed welfare and have then made their way out of it, gotten good jobs and bought homes.

Anyway, I would have no problem paying that extra 3% if I made enough to 'have' to pay it.

We are in another great depression

    (The Walton's kind)

Some say it was the "War machine" of WW2 that pulled America together with "Rosie the riveter " and FDR's work projects like TVA, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, etc...

When we wake up and realize we are "at War" and have not even called for gas rationing, or "Victory Gardens" as we have in the past, then we will understand Obama's position.

Obama has openly declared his "War on Oil Dependence", because he feels this is the primary issue influencing Foreign Policy, The Economy, Unemployment, wealth distribution.

Obama needs a workforce of millions to make this nation Energy Independent. Who better to test, train and employ to build and maintain a new alternative energy network, but our nation's current unemployed or disenfranchised?

Wouldn't a workforce that could provide all American homes and Businesses free power (upon completion), be worth an investment now.

I can give you all the details of this plan as I have been an Alternative Energy Consultant for Obama camp since 2007, if you are really interested.

Is paying $1.03 in taxes really that much worse than spending $1.00?

When Americans followed FDR in 30's, we were able to build Hoover Dam. All of Las Vegas runs on electricity made from this "Socialist" project, and probably will for next 10 thousand years.

Mt. Rushmore was another of these "socialist" projects to put people to work during the Great Depression. It will probably be here when Hoover Dam finally burns out from shellfish choking pumps.

My point is, whenever we invest in energy projects built by the poor in our nation, we profit many ways.

    1. All those who worked in these projects, got a sense of "Pride" not shame for getting Govt. Aid

    2. The power of the human spirit when working together produces great results that last in history.

    3. Work projects for the poor and unemployed have always made us a better nation.

I beleive your right to an extent. generally the poor are people who messed about at school and should be made to claw their way back up to the top. However there are those unfortunate like those whom have disabilities or mental disorders that do deserve welfare as it is not their fault they are unable to do all the same things that others can do.

There are reasons that the poor are given money and hat is to help reduce crime levels and make the streets a safer place even if they are doing a bad job at it.

Despite what people think most politicians, Dems in particular, don't want to help the poor either. They just want their votes.

The areas of the country that are controlled by Dem mayors, governors, representatives, senators, etc, are more impoverished then they were 40 years ago when they were also controlled by Dems.

You get what you vote for.

Besides, poor by what standards. Tell the impoverished of the world how poor you are. Roof over your heads, food in your belly, clothes on your back. Some even morbidly obese.

i was poor for a really long time. however, there are some poor people who will always stay poor. poor people normally work at low end dead end jobs. they havent been to college and cant afford to go. plus they have families to take care of. and personally, id rather be dirt poor than rich. rich people never have any fun.

Do you think we should just kill them because they are a hassle? Some people work hard and then something happens out of their control. Then they need the help they have given. I personally think you should just shut the f%^& up and pay your taxes and be happy as hell you have a job and a home.

If it were that simple, we wouldn't have nearly as many poor.
