Getting into NYC without your car?

Hi! I'm planning a trip to the Northeast this coming week that might include a day trip into NYC. I will be driving to Maryland first, and then up to the city from there. The only problem is, I've been to NYC before and I know I do not want to take my car anywhere near there -- for driving and parking expenses reasons.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get near enough a subway without getting into really stressful New York traffic? Thanks!

My friend, you can park your car at any parking facility near the PATH train stations in Hoboken or Jersey City and then take the PATH train into and out of New York City. The fare on the PATH train is $1.75 each way.

The links below will show you the exact location of parking garages in both cities.

If you've never driven in Manhattan before, don't. It'll be a nightmare. You'll have taxi's zipping by you. People speed crazy. Parking is like 30 to 40 dollars though. It's not worth it. There are plenty of alternatives though.

If you're going through Maryland, it means you'll be going through New Jersey. You can park at one of the New Jersey Transit stations. I'd recommend Elizabeth because they have a parking garage. It's like $5 to park. And it's $5.50 per person and it brings you to 31st street at Port Authority near Madison Square Garden which is close to Time Square in Midtown. NJ Transit is a little expensive, but a pretty good service.

An even better option is to drive through Staten Island. Go all the way to the last exit on the highway. Get off. And park at this spot right near where the Express bus picks you up. It's free. It's $5. All Express Buses in NYC are.

I just took a trip there not to long ago and you are correct if you want to take your car home after your trip then you do not want to take it anywhere near the city! There are busses and subways and trains EVERYWHERE. we stayed in a hotel right on the lincoln tunnel we stayed in jersey, we just walked right outside our hotel everymorning and a bus, train or trolly would come by about every 5 miniutes and you could get on they all went through the lincoln tunnel and dropped you off at the nearest bus station, which is seconds away from the subway as well as more bus stops and train stations, you can get anywhere you want in NY there are SO many subways and busses you shouldnt have any problem at all!

Depending on where in MD you will be, take Amtrak to Penn Station. Super luxe.
