Japanese rock/zen garden sand?
Does anyone know what type of sand is used in Japanese rock/zen gardens? The kind that holds the swirly patterns well?
This would be for an outdoor garden in the U.S.

Gravel is most commonly used not sand. Its easier to maintain. Any small, smooth, water washed gravel will work. When sand is used its usually silica sand, thats the fine , white sand used at most golf course bunkers. All types of sand will hold the "swirly patterns" well.

There is no special sand that "holds" the swirly patterns.
Part of the zen practice is the discipline of routine care. How long in between maintenance rakings will depend on the weather. Rain and wind will mean more frequent sprucing-up sessions.
Choose sand that you like the look of. Usually white or tan sand is used.
