You may have a few problems here,
First one is, your graphics card, Depending on what brand or type it is you may experience that the resolution stated in above answer may not be able to be achieved. But concidering thats a HDMI cable i'd say its a fairly new card.
Secondly, Right click on your desktop, Click Properties/ Display settings. Either way, you should set your resolution to 1440x900 or 1680x1050 or 1280 x 720. Either of these will be your monitors optimal resolution (usually stated in the manual). If you want full hd. You should find out what video card you have in your computer, then download a driver and a display controller (eg. ATI Catalyst Control Center) and you may have to FORCE 720p or 1080p. This is dangerous but most cards and monitors that are high end will display this easilly. But for what you need i'd say one of the 3 resolutions i earlier stated will be more than suitable. And also, quick fix, if your black line around the screen is relatively smaller and your new monitor has a AUTO button, hit that, it will automaticly fit the display to the screen.

Make sure you choose the recommended resolution of the said hd screen/monitor. It will be written somewhere in the manual.
You can change the resolution by right click on Desktop then click Properties and then click settings then choose the right resolution.

You need to either change the screen resolution to the one designed for the HD screen... if that wont work, the video card is outdated...
or you can just try auto-fit or auto-adjust or somethin like that on your monitor.. that will automaticly resize the picture to the monitor...

You may have accidently turned the screen off. Try the Fn key with one of the F keys. One will be to cycle through the video outputs. Maybe F4.
