Another toyota corolla question..check engine light..stays on constantly, need to pass smog?

Ok I went to auto zone and I was told the light cant be checked in the state of Ca..and if I try to clear the code its illegal..Wow can Ca make it more difficult to pass smog? Anyway I had the starter fixed, the car tuned and a battery installed, so I would just like to clear the light so I can take it to the smog shop...the starter really set me back alot of $$$$ and its a toyota corolla how much more do I have to spend!!! anyway I hope someone has an answer any help with be appreciated.

Usually when you unhook the battery, the check engine light will reset itself. If your light turned back on, then you have a problem you need to get fixed. You can't pass the smog by just clearing the light. It doesn't work that way. Shops have computer scanners to see what is the problem. I had the same problem with my car, and it was one of the spark plugs that needed to be replaces. Got it fixed and no problems with the check engine light after that. I would recommend going to a reputable shop and have them scan your computer to see what comes up. No guarantee the scan is correct, but that's where you get started.

THERE IS A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF COMPONENTS THAT COULD ACTIVATE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT,THEREFORE GUESSING IS NOT AN OPTION. CLEARING THE CODES OUT OF THE COMPUTER MEMORY WITHOUT IDENTIFYING THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM COULD END UP CREATING A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM THAN WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE.I RECOMMEND THAT YOU TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO YOUR NEAREST TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND HAVE IT CHECKED AND DIAGNOSED BY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL.COROLLAS ARE PRETTY MUCH TROUBLE FREE,SO THERE IS A PRETTY GOOD POSSIBILITY THAT YOUR CAR IS NOT HAVING A MAJOR PROBLEM

Simply clearing the code won't work. When you go to get your smog test they will be able to tell that you had the code cleared and will tel you to come back later. By that later time most likely the light will be on again.

you were ill informed at the zone, they don't want to work at places like that usually. Gus is right, your options are almost null without a scanner....guessimation ends up being expensive. i would suggest to head to local library and look at repair manual to your car. read up on symptoms if your car is running rough to seek problem, also reasons why the light will come on. follow flow charts to find the source of problem. if your corolla has a lot of miles on it, my bet is on the oxygen sensor on manifold. if all else fails..........take it to someone who has a scanner to pull codes then find problem and fix it. otherwise light will stay on. good luck

unfortunately if you clear the light without fixing the cause it still wont pass. the only way to get it checked is to go to the dealership.
