I'd like to open a daycare in IL?

That's my ultimate goal. I'm majoring in Early Childhood Ed at my local community college. Do I need to attend a university and have a four year degree to open a center?

RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!!!!!!!!!

    JK...

Check your local Department of Family Services.

Let me tell you my story if you don't mind!!!

Like you, my biggest goal was to open my own dc center. That was 10 years ago. Today, our business is very successful. We stay full and we always have a long waiting list. We have tenured employees and one of the best reputations in our town.

However, my husband and I stay completely stressed out all the time. It is so hard to balance a succesful business and a family. You HAVE to be there at all times to make your business work. I've seen so many dc centers come and go because the director doesn't want to be tied down to the center all day. We are in the business of children, you can never let your gaurd down. We do go on vacation, but we worry constantly that everything is ok. We are there from 6:30am untl 6:00pm EVERYDAY!

Usually our parents stay happy, and we don't deal with very many complaints, but you can't please everybody and when there is a problem that you can't fix, you feel like you've let yourself, your caregivers and most importantly the child down.

Then you have deadbeat parents who you either have to beat their weekly tuition from them, or call them at closing time to come pick up the child that they forgot.

I really, really don't mean to sound contrary and bitter, but if someone would have told me about the other side of running your own daycare center, maybe I wouldn't have been so dissappointed about my experience thus far.

On the bright side, people comment all the time about how thankful they are that they have found us. And the most important part is most definitly the children. They are amazing and at the end of the day, they make it all worth it!!

I really do wish you the best of luck, and I hope your business takes off quickly and sucessfully!!!
