Dairy-free cheese substitutes? ?

So, I'm lactose intolerant, and the problem is I LOVE cheese. Does anyone know of or have any experience with either good cheese substitutes, or dairy-free frozen foods like pizza, mac and cheese, or pierogies?

Update:

I am vegetarian, and although this question doesn't have to do directly with veganism or vegetarianism, I figured that this would be the section with people most likely to know about what I'm looking for.

Update 2:

Lactose intolerance doesn't mean I can't have just cow's milk, it means that I can't have any milk, although sheep and goat milk has lower levels of lactose than cow's milk.

However, due to processing and such, hard cheeses (ie, asiago) like I'd sprinkle on my pasta are so low in lactose that they're OK with me.

nutritional yeast is awesome. its good for you too, if you get the fortified option. you can just sprinkle it on stuff, or make a cheese sauce by adding soy milk and margarine. you can get it at pretty much any health food store.

I like Vegan Rella. It's 100% vegan: no lactose or casein. It comes in both cheddar and mozza flavours. It's not great on its own, but works very well in sauces or melted, like for Mac & Cheese, veggieburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc. The mozza can be shredded and used to make veggie pizza, or used in spaghetti.

It can generally be found at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and other health-food oriented stores.

  • There are quite a few different alternatives like sheeps or goats chese. They both have different kinds e.g. Parmesan, Pecorino and Feta for the sheeps cheese. Goats cheese may have different types deppending on the producer.

    Hope this helps! =)
