What experience do you want in a US presidential candidate?

Ideology aside, I'm very curious as to what Americans of any political affiliation want on the resume of their ideal candidate.

I've followed the election very closely, but I'm a UK citizen so I don't have an agenda to grind. We have Gordon Brown, who is dissatisfactory on some levels but, as an economist, has handled the economic crisis very well for the UK so far. France has Sarkozy, who is blisteringly intelligent.

It would seem to me that, in principle, your major party candidates are both very well placed. One has a very respectable military career and the benefit of years in Washington, the other is a constitutional scholar with a voting history that reflects excellent personal judgement.

What, exactly, would be on your ideal candidate's resume?

I personally feel that experience is important because you would then have a history of actions to examine. I believe that people will do as they have done before. Its just human nature. So as you look at the candidates you begin to get a sense of who they are.

Obama likes to hang out with questionable people, tell people what they want to hear instead of the facts and is afraid to stand up for what he feels is right ( voting "present" ) instead of yes or no.

John McCain is a decorated war hero with a incredibly long history for reform and challenging the status quot. He likes straight talk and is not afraid of a fight. He also has the guts to keep this country safe in the future.

Obviously I a pro McCain but no one can dispute the truth.

We've had presidents from many different backgrounds and degrees of experience.

I don't believe a candidate necessarily needs to have a "certain" amount of experience and years devoted to national politics to be considered qualified. I'm more concerned with aspects such as the ability to unite and organize, an excellent communicator, the right temperament, intelligent, expertise on the functionings of American government and the U.S. Constitution, and being someone with vision, wisdom, and foresightedness.

We've had past presidents that have fulfilled those qualifications, such as Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson (before he fell ill), Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, Ronald Reagan, and even Bill Clinton. In my opinion, Barack Obama fulfills those qualifications. I think he will make an excellent president.
