d is the variable in this equation. Both sides of the equal sign are the same number (thus, it's an equation). Therefore you have to isolate the d to figure out what it equals. You do this by subtracting 6 from both sides, so it is
-2d = 36
Then to further isolate d you must divide both sides by -2.
d = -18
Test it by putting in -18 for d in the original equation. Does it work?
6- 2(-18).
6 minus negative 36 is the same as 6 + 36, or 42. It is correct.

Solve for d, which means you have to get d alone one one side of the equation.
6-2d=42
Subtract 6 from each side
6-6-2d=42-6
-2d=36
Divide by -2
d= -18
Hope this helps! :)

well so it it 6-2d=42 this is what you do...
1.) if you are solving for d that means you want to get d alone.
2.)First you must subtract 6, you do this because 6 is a positive and you do the opposite of what the number is(Ex. -6 you would do 6...8d you would do divided by 8)
3.) you know have -2d=36
4.) know you want to get the d alone
5.)So you divide by -2. You do this because -2d means multiplication and you want to do the opposite (ex: Addition&subtraction, Multiplication & division.
6.) now you have the answer
7.) d= -18

6-2d=42
-6 -6 <-- subtract 6 from both sides to isolate the -2d
________
-2d=42-6
-2d= 36 <-- 42 minus 6 is 36 so negative 2d equals 36
/-2 /-2 <-- divide each side by -2 to isolate d
________
d= -18 <-- 36 divided by -2 is negative 18, so d= -18

first subtract 6 on both sides. you'll get -2d=36. next divide -2 on both sides and you'll end up with d = -18

collect like terms
subtract 6 from both sides
- 2d = 42 -6 =38
multiply both sides by -1
2d = -38
dived both sides by 2
d = -19

great... almost everyone posting has got it right...
Tori & Angry Ginger get my thumbs up.
So, I'll do the written version just for fun...
The equation states: Six minus Two multiplied by "d" equals forty-two.
To solve, you need to isolate the variable "d." i.e., Solve for "d".
So, the goal is to get rid of the numbers on the left one at a time until you end up with the solution that states; "d" is equal to...(the answer.)
First, subtract Six from each side of the equal sign.
So; Subtracting Six from: Six minus Two multiplied by "d" ends up as - Negative Two multiplied by "d".
And, subtracting Six from: Forty-two ends up as - Thirty-six.
At this point you have: Negative Two multiplied by "d" is equal to Thirty-six.
Next, you need to divide both sides by Negative two (to eliminate the two and isolate "d").
So, Negative two multiplied by "d" divided by Negative two, leaves "d" all by itself.
And, Thirty-six divided by Negative two, gives you the end value of "d" - which is ... Negative eighteen.
There we go: we now have - "d" is equal to Negative eighteen.
- - proof: you can do the math.. without numbers : )
