My Check engine light comes on 2001 Ford Ranger?
I just bought a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge. My gas gauge isn't working and the check engine light is on constantly. I filled the tank up and it seems like the gauge is somewhat working again. I took it to autozone and they checked it out and the code said it has something to do with the gas.. the guy told me i would have to take it to the dealer. is there a cheaper way of getting this fixed? can the part be ordered online. Ford charges 85.00 just to look at it.on a machine.I need it to pass emissions and the guy told me with the check engine light on it wont.pass emissions.

there has been some problems with sulfur buildup on the fuel lever sending unit in the gas tank. it can cause erratic gauge operation and the check engine light to come on. ford is recommending to try using chevron techron through a few tanks to clean the buildup off.

You need to enlist the help of a good shop.
I believe the fuel gauge had a recall from Ford. THAT you can check at a dealer.
But, resetting the CE light won't help. A code scanner will show the emissions monitors are not ready. That will certainly Fail you!

thats true it will fail smog. if you had the code it would have been easier to answer... so who knows if there is another way to fix it or what it is... you can also visit other shops like aamco or even a shop that works just on ford vehicles but is not the dealer. look online for shops near you. some might even diagnose for free as long as repairs are done with them something the dealer wont do

they just wont plug it in if it has a MIL light on, doesnt automatically mean it wont pass I/M, simply unplug your battery right before you get it to the inspection shop, the MIL should stay off long enough to get it inspected. and the shop will be none the wiser. i would maybe recommend doing this in advance to see how LONG it takes for the light to come on, unless it IS an emissions fault, you should have the light off for a good drive cycle.

take the negative battery post off and turn on the head lights to drain any all power. Reconnect the
battery terminal. This will reset the computer. If light stays out problem solved.

does it turn on right away? after it was erase,if it does not ,try a drive cycle, then go directly to inspection
to do a drive cycle, drive 10 miles ,5 on free way 5 on side street, this will erase the code that show it was just erase
some times the light will turn on after a drive cycle, then you need to have it fix
