whats nikon d40 equal in a canon?

    The D40 is directly comparable to the previous-generation Rebel XT (aka 350D).

    The current entry-level Canon DSLR is the Rebel XS (aka 1000D). This is a more expensive (by about $70), fuller-featured camera than the D40 with a 10mp vs 6.1mp resolution, a faster burst speed, Live View Mode etc.

    Canon's equivalent is the XS. It has a few more mega pixels for $100. Not too much too much to justify the price difference.
