Ferret help!!!!! housing situational NO I LOVE HIM AND I AM NOT GIVING HIM UP?
So i have had my ferret for a while and i have been thinking lately that i might let him run around my room when i am not there i think of just opening his cage so he can come and go as he pleases within my room. However when ever i take him out of his cage he always does his business in the wrong places. i have tried to train him and for a while he did it but now he wont so would letting him out be a good idea and if so what would be the best way to fix the litter problem.
thanks

You don't need to give him up for any reason. Ferrets, by nature, hit the litterbox about 98% of the time. This is what you do when he is out. Get yourself some newspaper or any kind of paper will do. Put it in the places that he has been going outside of the litterbox. 9 times out of ten he will hit the places that have the paper. Remember, he's not a cat so he will not always go back to the litter box. Ferrets can sometimes be lazy and if they feel that the litterbox is too far away from them, and they have to go, they will not travel to the litterbox. Newspaper is good, or construction paper, or brown paper or even notebook paper.

Even litter trained ferrets with eliminate outside the box about 15% of the time- it's just something you deal with as a ferret owner. Don't allow full access to your room while you're away. Only let him out when you're home and able to give him your full attention. You can try using multiple litter boxes, and only in the places where the ferret likes to eliminate- Good luck!

I let my ferret roam my house like the cats do. You need to make sure there is nothing that will hurt him before you leave him unsupervised. My ferret poops on the carpet too and I'll tell you what I do. You can get these puppy pads and put them in the corners or wherever he does his business. They are made for puppies who need a place to pee but they work for any animal. And I have this little carpet shampooer that cleans the carpet after my ferret has an accident. It cost me $40 on amazon.com and was well worth it. Good luck.

well i have never own a ferret before but i have cared for one before,
anyway i have a rabbit which is litter trained.
1.Have you got a litter box for him to go in you never mentioned if you have
2.Have you also got a litter box where he sleeps/his cage as this will get him use to it
3.Maybe you should add more trays around the area you might have a lazy ferret
4.make sure you praise him about every 5-10 time his goes in the right place
5.make sure occasionally he has a treat for going in his 'box'
6.put any 'waste' in the tray to show him where to do it
7.he probably is scent marking so may stop once the whole room is scented! :S
Good Luck!

Well I have heard of ferrets using litter boxes. Just got to continue to bring him to it, even if he is in the middle of his business. Then praise him and give him a treat once he does it in the litter box.
