Varying answers here! My short answer is HELL YES. Synthetics don't breathe, they fall apart easier, and they're usually too 'hot.' Canvas rugs breathe well, are a lot more durable, and if you take care of them (ie waterproofing, fiixng up rips) they will last YEARS.
I use a waterproof canvas for most of Winter- I only use my synthetic when it is FREEZING and my horse needs the extra warmth (or if my canvas rug is in need of a breather!)

I have not found a good canvas horse blanket. I find that either big d or weatherbeater are the best blankets for the best. I have some that are more then 10 years old and still in very good shape even after being used by yearlings and 2's

Canvas sun rots. Bottom line. Have you looked at Weatherbetas?

I bought 3 of these in '05 and all 3 are still functional which says a LOT about a blanket.

Canvas because it is more durable, thicker, keeps the body heat regulated and is a natural product.
Good luck
