How do I repair the switch to the ceiling fan in the livingroom and outdoor porch light?

Both stopped working at the same time, they share a switch box.

Update:

We checked the circuit breakers, reset all of them, still no luck, everything else appears to be working fine.

Update 2:

Last Monday we had a fan/light installed in a different room, we also had a remote control added to it. Now that light turns itself on as does the fan although at different times. I assumed they were on a different circuit than the living room / porch light since they are in different rooms but now I wonder....Halloween is over this stuff shouldn't be happening!

Since it isn't the circuit breaker you might have an open connection in the utility box that houses the switch. It could also be a GFCI that is tripped somewhere close by. So first check all the GFCI outlets inside and outside the house, then you will have to check the switch wiring to see if a wire nut has come off or the wire has come loose on the switches. If you find someone has wired the switches with a push in connection, remove the connection and use the screws on the side of the switches instead.

Are you sure the switch is bad? Use a multi meter to test both screws on the switch to ground or nuetral with the switch in the on position. If both screws read 120 V then the switch is fine and you have a different problem.

If your switch test good, then I would drop both light fixtures and check the wire junctions. Since both lights went out at the same time that means they are on the same circuit and are joined together at the light fixture outlet boxes in the ceiling or in a junction box in the attic. Your hot or your neutral has separated somewhere, you will need to unscrew the wire nuts and make sure the wires didn't pull apart. Remember, if you don't find the problem in the light fixture boxes then you will have to climb into the attic and search out the two light fixtures giving you trouble and trace them both back to the junction box they originate out of and inspect the wire junctions there. Good luck and wear a dust mask.

they are on the same circuit most likely its a loose wire nut on the line side turn off the power and check all connection's in the switch box this could be a fire hazard

You might have a breaker tripped. Both are more than likely on the same circuit. If everything else is working plugs etc, then something else is going on.If this is the case might need to call a electrician.
