What is THE best external hard disk drive, preferably portable, at least 50gigs?

I need a HD for simple storage of mp3's and personal files. As a rule I don't save these on my computer after bad experiences of crashes and such, and I like having free space on my internal HDD because if I transfer everything from my external, it slows considerably.

I currently have a Western Digital Passport that I bought in 2006 and love. I heard they're rubbish but honestly I've had no problems with it. It's dropped quite a few times, a few more this month, and I just want to buy a new one to back up my back up drive as I'm paranoid.

They don't make my version of the passport anymore, and I heard that the replacement they have now is DEFINITELY rubbish, so I'm asking you guys what is the best External HDD to get.

Really important:

- Sturdy, can fall once in a while

- No crazy ish: crashing, failing, smoking, etc.

- Quiet, attractive, small, not noisy, no hot operating temps.

Update:

Also, Vista's Scandisk tells me the drive is cool. Should I trust this? Worth doing a defrag once in a while?

the best one i can think of is a rugged passport hard drive which is made by Lacie it matches the criteria you have set check out there website to find out about it, if i remember it comes in sizes from 250-500 gigabytes so more than adequate storage space. http://www.lacie.com/ the highest price you will pay is £150 for the 500 GB version.

Absoultely certain, you are able to do this, todays cutting-edge exterior problematic-drives are very transportable and extremely small in length, in addition they dont opt for exterior skill and draw skill from the USB cable its appropriate. WD, Seagate are both I were utilizing.. they're as sturdy as (even more suitable) than that of the former inner harddrive, with very sturdy move speeds.
