You will find that with 512MB or more of RAM this system will run much much better. You can find suitable RAM on ebay. PC100 or PC133 DDR memory.

You can also improve system performance by doing the following:

    - Uninstalling any programs you no longer use.

    - Turning off windows services you do not use (search for "Black Viper Windows Services" on google for a guide for your version of windows) - be cautious.

    - Making sure there are minimum programs working at startup.

    - Deleting old files and folders you do not use.

    - Defragmenting the hard drive after you have done everything else.

    - Installing a separate (not on motherboard) graphics card.

Also to improve internet performance on any pre-Vista Windows system run a program called TCPOptimizer - you will see up to a 70% speed improvement. Be careful on wireless network cards and back up existing configuration first.

You can also use a program called nlite to create a cut-down version of windows that will run faster (some expertise required).

If you are using the PC for internet/office type applications you do not need more. See the link in the sources section to a PIII I recently upgraded and reinstalled. This one plays fullscreen DVD perfect quality, Youtube videos fullscreen perfect quality.

Anyone telling you you need a new computer is just playing one upmanship on you.

    Best wishes

Well I have 2 PIII systems at home. The 800Mhz to 1Ghz Processors usually take a max of 512MB RAM. Probably 133Mhz RAM Maybe a little faster. Start with a 256 Stick in combo with the 128 stick. it should work. Or just go for the Gusto and get 2 256 sticks and put them in. You can get those sticks pretty cheap right now. Good Luck!

I think that this computer is too old to be worth while upgrading. I doubt any of the components in it a able to be run on a modern machine and I doubt that you will be able to find upgrade components for it.

It will cost you a lot less money and a lot less hassle to accept that it is time for a new PC - they are not expensive at the mo.

For this computer i bet it wont be possible. Motherboards these days wont be able to support such old computers and resulting to upgrade it will be a waste of time and money. It would be best if you acquire a new equipment. You can assemble your own computer to suite your preferences. Good HIGH RAM, Nice graphic card and lots of HD memory, men i tell you, its going blow your old computer away. But its up to you though.

No point throwing money at this machine.

I had a really old Sempron 2600-based machine and looked into upgrading. In the end I just thought "to hell with it" and bought a brand new machine. So glad I did.

It's much less hassle to buy something new.

Obviously you can upgrade to 512MB RAM (133 MHz SDRAM that supports PIII).If you have one AGP slot on you motherboard then you can add an agp with 256MB memory(must be compatible with your motherboard and cpu). With this you can use XP for any activity including general level gaming.

If you want to upgrade to PIV then you have to change motherboard, cpu, ram, smps, cabinet.

Depends on what motherboard you got. Most old motherboard have a processor and a heatsink that is glue on to it. Besides new computers.

    Need more info.

If you want to upgrade it to P-IV you need to upgrade your motherboard. Adding memory can improve your speed. Do not install lots of application.

Donate it to charity and buy a new one. Don't bother upgrading. You'll be spending an arm and a leg trying to upgrade it.
