Think of music as a language. And each style of music uses melodies and rhythms to speak to people in different languages.
The categories are as widespread as the languages we speak. Even in the U.S. we all speak English but we have different dialects. From southern accents to midwestern to areas like NY/NJ and Boston have a very distinct accents.
So does music. Rock & Roll has many differnt styles. As does every genre of music. There isn't just one style of rock music just like there isn't just one accent in the U.S.
