What happens to an amnesiac who doesn't remember her name and isn't claimed?

She becomes a Jane Doe, right? A ward of the State? Would that mean that after a certain amount of time she would be released to a caretaker of sorts? What are the legalitites based around something like this and could you give me any websites to help me in my research. I'm having trouble finding any information.

thanks in advance.

The reason you are having trouble is that this doesn't happen that often. Yes, she would become a ward of the state. The only question is whether or not she could one time become independent. That would be determined by a state judge. This would probably be after a halfway house.

There is also the chance that it would be in a state controlled asylum, because even though she is not crazy, it is a neurological disorder.
