I dont know that it is even anything intentional, The companies have to get the best pic they can regardless sometimes of the lighting and background. In the event of taking the pisc as well there are probably so many cameras around that the skin is actually lightened by the flashs more then photo editing. Hard to say. They sure arent doing anything to darken mccains hair.

Have you seen him in person? How do you know they "lightened his skin"?

Anyway, in answer to your "question" it could be the lighting they use to photograph him. Dark colors absorb light, and if it's a light background the facial features will not stand out. It's not to make him "lighter" to appeal to white people, if that is what you are suggesting.

It's the light used from the flash, set-up lights, or background lighting to adjust in order for the subject to be clear. This is true for any person. Sometimes Palin looks darker in some photos than others, and McCain is very, very white. It's the lighting, good or bad. That is all.
