Can someone in America explain to me why you have to queue for hours to vote.?

Here in the UK you maybe have to go about a mile or two to a polling station and then it only takes about ten seconds to tick you off a list and then put a cross in a box. What do you have to do that takes so long that you have to queue, or are there not many polling stations?

The reason of that might be that the states are responsible for the election not the federal government. This means that every state has its own system. This leads to a kind of lack of coordination and bad organization.

Not enough polling stations, or voting machines. This year the voter turn-out is much higher than ever before, which has a lot to do with the long lines.
