What do you think of the results -- Internet Baseball Awards, AL Cy Youngs?
The Internet Baseball Awards, administered by the good folks at Baseball Prospectus (http://www.baseballprospectus.com),/ were announced today for the American League honorees (NL tomorrow).
The IBAs are open to anyone on the Web (registered with BP), so the electorate is much larger than what the BBWAA uses for their awards. Much more democratic, much more fun, and the self-selected population tends to be much more driven by statistical performance than mere narrative.
Here, the 2008 AL Cy Young Award top results:
rank, ace (team) -- ballots -- points
1. Cliff Lee (Cleveland) -- 1478 (of 1525) -- 13750
2. Roy Halladay (Toronto) -- 1387 -- 10283
3. Jon Lester (Boston) -- 827 -- 3753
4. Francisco Rodriguez (Los Angeles) -- 425 -- 1698
5. Daisuke Matsuzaka (Boston) -- 410 -- 1497
Lee was the superstar pitcher for the junior circuit all season, and this voting result comes as no surprise, though Halladay was a lot closer in second place than I had expected. The rest of the candidates receiving votes tailed off very quickly after that.
But -- LOOK HERE, powers that be, this is a QUESTION -- what is your (the reader) opinion of these results? How do you think it will compare with the BBWAA AL CYA results (announced 13-November)?
My ballot:
1. Lee, 2. Matsuzaka, 3. Halladay, 4. Soria, 5. Mussina
I think, with five rankings, there's always room for at least one relief pitcher (if there is one worthy of consideration), and I preferred Soria to Rodriguez. Lester would have been my sixth vote.

Those rankings are alright. I think Matsuzaka should have been higher (like #3) behind Lee (the obvious #1) and Halladay. No way Rodriguez deserves to be in the top 5. At best, he was the 3rd best closer in the AL. Soria and Nathan both deserve to be up there instead of him.
I think the actual BBWAA ranks will go as so:
Lee
Lester
Matsuzaka
Halladay
K-Rod (completely undeserving of this #5 spot, though)

Those picks don't look too bad, but I don't think relief pitchers should be in contention for CYA's. Starter's pitch many more innings which is much more valuable. And Matsuzaka is a five inning pitcher who walks too many.
1. Lee
2. Halladay
3. Mussina
4. Lester
5. Ervin Santana

Who's confused? Not me.
Your question clearly states " 2008 "AL" Cy Young award by BP".
These selections all looked terrific to me.
I don't agree that relief pitchers should be in the mix at all.
Besides, I don't consider closers as even being relief pitchers.

As an Indians fan, I want the season to mean something. Lee should get the Cy Young, though, with or without my bias.
Bring our other Cy back, too :( I miss CC...

Krod makes the top five? There were three stoppers who had better seasons than he did. What the heck?
