What exactly does the "Republican Base" consist of?

I hear so much about the "base." What do republicans consider their own base to be?

Update:

Why, if republicans want a smaller government, do they feel the need to be against abortion? Why does the government need to ban it if you want less government intervention anyway?

And why even get involved in the abortion topic if it has nothing to do with you or your family anyhow?

I think it consists mostly of people who want the government to be as small as possible. They figure they have theirs and the rest of the population should fight for the scraps that are left. Then on the far right are the bible thumpers that think Christianity should be the official religion.

Lower taxes, smaller government control, less gun restrictions, no handouts for welfare, pro-life for abortion, and are for the death penalty. More military spending and want businesses to provide health care. Also less environmental restrictions.
