Are Bands With Noticeable Legacies Unfairly Bashed?

I'm talking about bands that're either still around after many years or long defunct, but are still liked by many. (eg: Rolling Stones, Eagles, Beatles, Nirvana, etc, ...who else?)

I know Y!A is just very small cross section of the (much) bigger picture, but it sometimes gives one the impression 2 types of bands get flack:

-Ones that've been around 20+ years

-Ones that're no longer around but still w. generally good reputations.

So is this an "automatic"/ human nature reaction some of the general population has or something else?

Hope that was worded properly! :)

Update:

Sax- I hear ya, bro. & I saw that question you mentioned & man was he annoying. I replied to it & let him have it.

Update 2:

Lol- Riki- I think you're right. & I'll add that I get 2 things:

-being annoyed at the threads that constantly shove X band down your throat (eg: "Your top 5 favorite songs/albums by...." etc)

-YA is def' Not a good representation of the general public.

Update 3:

My gut reaction was to give it to Sax b/c I totally felt his aggravation. Only thing that held me back was knowing that I've seen plenty of young people genuinely interested in the older bands & what their legacies mean. (here & in the real world)

Some are a little zealous about it, (as Darth & Jazz pointed out) but that's only b/c these bands are new to them. We were likely the same way @ 1 point.

So I give it to KP. :) Well said. Though I'm having a real tough time thinking guys like FOB & Tokio Hotel are gonna be classic rock down the road. They'll still have to compete for that title w/ the 60s & 70s classics. Trust me. :)

As always Fonzie, you nailed it square in the bullseye.

Lots of good answers on here already, especially Darth's, Sax, Rosie and Kyle.......

Add to it a few things.

    1) Sadly.. you have to admit, there are a lot of Classic Rock Elitists who constantly make snide commetns about the quality of good music, to the tune of there not being ANY good music penned in the last 25 years. Or if therre has been..it''s when a band like Rush or the Stones or AC/DC put out a new album.

    2) Lots of kids have been raised on ClearChannel top 40 drek. When all you have ever listened to is crap..how are you supposed to be able to tell what actually is good? (Think about how some kids have eaten McDonalds every dya...and if you cook them a real hamburger, with REAL cheeses, and organic meat..they think it tastes horrible... because their tastebuds have become accustomed to the preservatives and crap. Same with music.)

    3) There ARE a fair number of Classic Rock bands that honestly AREN"T as amazing as people say. If you were not around to see the British Invasion, and experience the way it Revolutionized music..you take the changes for granted (aka..Rock has always been around all my life... so really what's the big deal?) and add that to Bands like the Beatles that WERE amazing (especially in the context of their time) but are musically only good, not great, when you break them down player by player.

    4) The Been There Done That Syndrome. This was something that came to my attention when talking to Vashti about the band Death. Because she was not even alive when Chuck revolutionized Metal...she has trouble appreciating them. Why? Because she heard 20 others bands that sounded just like Death (or maybe Better) before she ever heard the original...and so the original didn't sound so amazing anymore. (AKA..lack of perspective..or at least different perspective. I see Metallica, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath get hit by this too.)

And it is easy to extend this to bands like the Stones and the Beatles.

    5) Parent's music. Most of the time..we don't like to be associated with our Parent's generation. They are old. How can their music be cool? Thankfully not everyone buys into this, but enough do.

Then you have those same people flock together in High School and Jr High, and with no one wanting to stand out...it is easy to dismiss these bands without EVER giving them a chance.

Thankfully a lot of kids eventually DO give theses bands a shot..and are usually FLOORED.

So... give em time. Some kids will smarten up and stop following the crowd. Some will just genuinely NEVER like those bands (hey..musical taste IS subjective).

Lastly...lets remember one thing... (kinda related to the Classic Rock elitists)... Most of these bands ARE NOT making music anymore. So..... when you see the same exact questiona sked about the same exact band 250,567,890 times..it gets OLD. Especially when there IS still tons of good music being made, and new stuff to enjoy and explore.

Let's remember..... a lot of the stuff out there today (not talking the Pop Mainstream) are bands that will be looked as like classic rock in the next 20-30 years. And it'll come under fire by the next generation too. (Just as the Classic Rock generation took shots at Big Band and Doo Wop and the stuff THEIR parents listened too)

    Yes.

There is a desire on the part of many people to be a contrarian. That is, someone who disagrees simply for the sake of it. In this way they can be seen as some transcendent person who is better than you.

I think there is also a strong anti-mainstream current wherein people bash anything that is not sufficiently obscure or hip. This is manifested in all those, "Anyone know any good underground bands?" type questions.

Oh, there are times when the overwhelming number of people who just suck The Beatles d*ck does get annoying and I can see why people lash out and make anti-Beatles comments. I get tired sometimes when some 14 year old decides he's going to lecture everyone on exactly how awesome John Lennon is.

Honestly I think a lot of the R&P backlash against bands like Zep, The Stones etc is caused by a combination of the following factors

1 Band Bashing. (And I admit I am as guilty of this as anyone) Realistically speaking, no one enjoys hearing that their favorite pet band is basically the worst piece of Musical junk ever aborted. So the next time a Q about a legendary band gets asked...well the empire just strikes back, Ya know.

2 R&P Overhype and "Fangirlism". Let's face it. A few of the most legendary Bands (The Beatles, The Who, Nirvana) have some really, really rabid followers here in R&P Land. People who constnantly post rhapsodies about how amazing the hairs in Paul McCartney's left nostril are. This turns a lot of People off, badly. And the fact that several of them are point gaming cheats and spend all day helping each other get ahead doesn't really help either.

I think that this explains a lot of the backlash against some of the Legends of Rock up in here.

i think we should remember that when a band is popular and has a strong reputation they get picked apart more because people tend to avoid bands that are generally disliked...because more people listen to them more people decide that they dislike them, and therefore more bashing takes place...this is the way that bands like the jonas brothers get killed, because so many people DO in fact like them, we listen and understand that they're **** and then we do our bashing...the same thing goes for bands that have some sort of legitimate legacy, popularity is all the same thing regardless of whether or not a band is respectable

The "general population?" Most of the posters on here are younger people and the bands you mention are too old for them. They want to listen to the newest thing and are not interested in any legacy. It's like the question someone asked last week, "how can you listen to the Beatles, the audio quality stinks." He has probably never watched a classic movie because it's in black and white. The older bands are simply not relevant to them.

  • Yeah, it has to do with generational ignorance though if you ask me. I, for one, love The Eagles, and when I post Qs about them on Y!A I either get the general "oh yes they are great" answer from the older R&P'ers and I usually get the "oh they are so lame they suck.." answers from others my age. Kids aren't interested in legacy or talent it seems for that matter. All they care about is that what they listen to is cool with their friends, so if it's not, they bash it to no end. It's very unfair.

  • i think you should know...

this user really only denigrates two kinds of artists...

1.acts that are no good ie.linkin park, papa roach...

    or

    2.acts that exploit children...miley cyrus...jonas...

i could add a 3rd for bands like milli vanilli and the bay city rollers and the jonas brother's(once they are of majority) that suck because their sole purpose is to make money and not music...

    ok so three...

and i will admit that i have almost ALWAYS disliked the eagles and i blame them for the current watered down rock and roll state of country music that runs rampant today...but the other bands you listed were some good stuff and i would add...

    the allman brothers

    tom petty

    and the always forgotten, y&t.

I think amongst the younger crowd, they're not really liked all that much. Especially with teenage girls (not counting me!! lol). Today, the majority of younger audiences listen to things like hip-pop, and rap. Or at least a new modern version of "rock". I know alot of kids who listen to punk-rock, too.

Hardly any of the younger audiences are true classical-rock fans, though. And usually the majority of them tend to think that since classical rock isn't 'newer', it sucks compared to the new musical-era in which we live.

Most of the older crowd enjoys it, though, because that's what they grew up with as kids. Funny huh? ;)
