Now is the time to ask: why did Bush get it so wrong?

The Americans have voted for change...so what was Bush trying to achieve, why did he get things so wrong (or did he?) and what should the Republicans do now?

Update:

Unofficial...I might believe you! What was he trying to achieve?

Update 2:

Jonas..Interesting viewpoint..as you say, time will tell

Update 3:

Bush and his right wing christian cronies made huge mistakes that cost tens of thousands of lives. Those republican criminals destablised and debased other cultures and wrecked their countries. I feel so ashamed of America. They need to work hard to repair what they have done.

People will see in times to come that Bush was actually quite a good president, who was handed unbelievable issues to try to sort out and did his best. People will also see that he protected us on our soil from terrorism, that he never lied about Iraq and in fact did the moral thing by going there, and that the economic policies of the Bush Administration were not even 25% of the root causes of the economic collapse.

People were very, very critical of the Reagan presidency for years while he was president. Now he is consistently voted one of the top 10 presidents in our history. I don't think Bush will crack the top 10, but he will certainly be in the top 50%.

And if anyone here thinks that Al Gore or John Kerry could have done ANY better, they are lying to themselves.

Hate me all you want, but watch and see. Attitudes will change about him. Too bad our country as a whole has acted so disgracefully and held such little respect for our highest office, even if it was simply for the sake of it being our highest office, Bush deserved and still deserves more honor and credit.

    Arrogance, and some ignorance combined.

If your asking if he was the one that got it so wrong do you not remember in 2000 the US had a balanced economy and was at peace? It didn't all go wrong on its own. It never does. He may as well have handed your economy over to a casino owner. And as for this 'war on terror', he seems to have forgotten there were no weapons of mass destruction, and he knew that before he invaded Iraq.

Politicians need to remember who's paying their wages, and listen to what it is they want. Times are changing, but the old guard didn't realise it, and honestly thought their electorate would accept less than they deserved.

Its the same the world over, not just in the US

bush had it wrong from his early days in his administration. he will easily replace Nixon as our worst President ever. Doubling the deficit has to be his worst accomplishment. Being the only President to have a domestic air attack is another blemish on his record. This war on Iraq and i mean the weapons of mass destruction never seemed to be found. By the way Israel did take out Iraq's nuclear program in 1981. The United Nations told us clearly in 2003 not to invade Iraq but of course Bush would not listen 1 trillion dollars 4 thousand us troops and 1 million Iraqi lives later.....

  • We were rebounding from the dot com bust of 2000, 9-11 and had our troops where they should have been all along in Afghanistan going into 2003. But that decision to go to Iraq brought down his presidency, McCain's hopes of being president, his party, our economy, our standing in the world, etc.

I don't think he is an evil man like the moveon.org crowd but damn this war have an ugly domino effect.

The repubs should shrink back into the hole they came from and rethink everything they stand for. I am talking about the repubs in washington, not here on Y/A. So don't ger your panties in a bunch!

I don't think he knew what he wanted to achieve except anything that made him look good. The problem with that is the premise was based on ego. It all got so big and out of control, he couldn't handle it and ended up having to leave it to all of his "friends" to deal with while he hid.

One of bush's weaknesses was a lack of direction. He never did a very good job of telling us what he wanted to achieve.

Bush's greatest failing was his inability to control government spending. He failed to reduce the size of government.

The Republican party has to stop pandering to religious conservatives and get back to being fiscally conservative and moderately pro business.
