why is it not racist that at least 97% of black people voted for Obama?

If 97% of white people would have voted for McCain, everyone would be shouting racism, but when 97% of black people vote for Obama it considered "Blacks just being proud of there race"

Update:

96% of blacks did not vote for clinton, please dont post complete lies. I have researched it and im going to go find the direct link, but it was no where near 96%. Yes, black vote D. but per CNN as of 20 min ago, this was the highest black turn out and Obama recieved at least 97% of the black vote which they said was the highest % ever. When white people say they are proud about their race they are called racist, so why is it ok for blacks?

Update 2:

Im white and Im 100% Greek. Turkey enslaved my relatives and people for 5 times longer then America enslaved Blacks, where is my benefits? To the person that said we are all equal, wake up and be real, if we are then why do people get jobs and get in college based soley on the color of there skin even if they dont have the best qualifications for the job/school. That all needs to go away now, we need equality for all, not equality for everyone thats not white.

Update 3:

Catherine D.

Thank u for making my point exactly, whites voted for who they thought was better not based on color of skin, just like u said, thank you!!

Update 4:

11:11

thats the WHOLE POINT, 97% of blacks have NEVER voted for a white guy, they have been more split, the first time there is a black guy they all vote for him, you also just made my point for me, thank you.

Update 5:

for those who say 97% of blacks always vote democratic, that is totally inaccurate. This was the highest % ever. Its a fact, cant be argued, its been on every channel for since the election was over, if you havent heard it or your just in denial, wake up.

Update 6:

sparta23

I voted obama, Im a firefighter, he was much, much better for my life then McCain. I have reasons though, not just because of the color of his skin.

Update 7:

Obama08

no, i would not be proud at all, i would be extremely embarrassed. Its a sign of extreme lack of intelligence to vote for the president of the US based soley on his skin color, so I would be really embarrased that some people were dumb enough to base there vote soley on skin color. If you dont think there are at the very least 1% of people that voted for him based soley on his skin color then you dont live in reality. Also, why should past slavery have anything to do with who we should vote for today, there is no one alive today that owned slaves, no one on this planet owes any black anything at all more then they owe anyone else anything.

Update 8:

brett,

I have never heard that statistic before, i will research it. In addition, that is much more of a reason to vote for someone then the color of there skin. I would never vote for someone because of religion, but thats still a better reason then just color of skin. People of simular religions share a large number of the same view points, (stem cell, pro life, ect.) People of the same skin color have all different view points, there is nothing u can say all black people agree on.

Update 9:

Carpe dem,

thank you for making my point for me!! Thats exactly what i am saying, white people voted for who they though was best not based on color of skin and thats how Obama won. Thank you for agreeing with me!!

Update 10:

Thunder glutch,

u are missing the point, im not saying that, what im saying is #1. when you vote for the USA president, you should base your vote on more then the color of ones skin #2 if 97% of people voted for McCain, it would be called racism, but its ok for at least 97% of blacks to vote for Obama because the people that have been interviewed that have admitted to voting for him because hes black give the reason "im proud to support my fellow black man". If it was reversed and white guys said they were only voting for McCain because hes white and said "im doing it to support my fellow white man" they would be labled a racist so fast they would not be on every channel across the country with people bashing them. We see it all the time, example, charles barkley constantly makes fun of white people and has said Sean Bradley is only a NBA player because hes a tall goofy dude, and the NBA likes having more white guys in the league. Rush Limbaugh makes one comment and gets fired.

Update 11:

ALL LOOK AT CATCHRA's answer,

this is exactly what I am talking about and proves my point for 100% for sure. Im sure she will hurry and change her answer after reading this but this is exactly what she said. She said that she is a hispanic and if another hispanic ever runs for president she will support him. So, she has no idea at all what so ever about what any of his policies would be or even knows who his is but she is already saying she will support him ONLY beacause he is hispanic. THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!!

Update 12:

Milkmans--

you are very uneducated and you are making it very obvious you are. I already said I voted for Obama and listed why i voted for him. Next, I have plenty of black friends. You need to stop watching T.V., u are totally exaggerating the getting pulled over and followed in stores. I grew up around it and ya it happens but no where near as much as you would like people to believe. In addition, are u really ignorant enough to let the racist acts of other people force you to vote for someone based soley on the color of there skin. You must be because thats what u just told me. So because there are racist white people out there, it is ok for you to make racist decisions also, great logic on your part. Try thinking for yourself next time and not let other people forcing you into decisions, make your own decisions from now on if you can instead of being tricked easily by others and you will have better results.

Update 13:

Andrewm

thank you for researching the numbers, if you could, could you provide a link please. My point is that I think its racist to vote for someone based only on what color there skin is which is what i have heard people admit to. They are getting a pass because they say they are proud of being black to they are voting for a black man. The reason I quoted the 97% is because it was the highest ever so anytime you see the highest ever it rasies some eyebrows. My question is that why is it ok for black people to vote for another black based soley on skin color, but not ok for a white to do the same. It seems like people are saying they think because of slavery it makes it ok for blacks and not for whites. I dont agree with this, i didnt own any slaves so why should i be held to a different standard or anyone else in this country since no one living today ever owned slaves.

Update 14:

AndrewM

thanks for the links. I know you saw people on TV and in person that said they were voting for Obama because he is a black man. I have seen it in person at a Obama rally, and i have seen it on TV many times. I have also seen these same people interviewed and asked why they are voting for Obama, they say either they want to support a black man, or they said they want "change". They these people are asked to define what Obama will "change" and not one can give an answer and some start saying its racist to be asked that quesiton. They they are asked 3 basic questions, is Obama pro life? Is obama Pro gay marrige. Who is Obamas Vice President. the only question any could answer was the pro life and that was like 4 out of 10. I think 1 out of 10 could quote his views on gay marrige and NONE could name is running mate. So my question to you is, would you consider the people you see racist that say they are voting for Obama because he is a black man?

Update 15:

Your numbers ever prove my point further, so Obama has a higher % of black vote then LBJ did during the middle of civil rights movement when LBJ was one of the biggest proponents of civil rights ever. So you have a white guy that is a huge pro civil rights guy and he gets 94% of the vote and you have obama that does not support civil rights any more then McCain does and Obama gets a higher % of the vote. If that does not scream racisim i dont know what does. There is a huge difference in voting for someone because they believe in civil rights, then just voting for someone based on the color of there skin.

Update 16:

AndrewM

Your answer was awsome, I wish I could give out 2 best answers. Thank you for all the info and for replying to my edits.

It's ok to be proud of your race, but sometimes, but not all times, I feel like some black people take it way too far. In this case, they let the color of a candidates skin dictate who would be a better leader for the country.

And to answer your question, yes it's extremely racists. But white people are too scared to be called a "racist" so no one will speak out about it. There were black voters all over the media screaming "it's time to see a black president in office!" My reply? Who gives a damn? I don't care what color he is. He has no experience, and he has questionable policies. I don't care if he's black, white or orange.

It's sad that so many black people feel like they are so oppressed, even though they are not. There are more opportunities for blacks in this country than every before, and yes, we are equal not, whether they want to believe it or not.

Voting for Obama because he's black is like buying a car because you like the color. You're so blinded by the nice color that you don't bother to research the car, test drive it or inspect it. That is what has happened with Obama. Even before he started campaigning hard and before there wasn't a lot of information about him for people to research, many black people, but not all, made up their mind to vote for him because they want to be a united race.

It's so wrong and really says a lot about our country and what it's become. So terribly sad.

So many of my black friends that voted for McCain told me people were pressuring them to vote Obama, and telling them it's their duty as a black man to vote for him. They were incredibly insulted but at the same time, they told me they could only nod their heads at the ignorance. I can't believe that our country has come to such a scared, politically correct place that voting on someone for race is considered OK.

    SO sad.

Blacks are a minority in the country, whereas whites are the majority. Thus even if 97% of blacks vote for a certain candidate, it translates to a very small percentage of the overall population. Whereas when 97% of whites vote for a candidate, that is a large portion of the country.

And there is still another difference. Blacks were brought to this country as slaves and have endured oppression over the years often being stifled of their rights. Whites came here by choice. It cannot be called racism when supporters of the underdog support the underdog into winning an election. It's called lending their support to one of their own. As opposed to a large group of people shutting off the voice of the minority if whites support McCain.

  • 1 decade ago

It's not racism if they made the right choice, and the fact that he won is proof that they were right (at least, it's all the proof you'll ever be offered).

However, the fact that McCain got as many votes as he did proves that a large number of whites voted for McCain, so you're still a racist if you're white.

Obama's election changes nothing about that.

Any whites expecting that the "racism" charge is behind us because of this result are in for a shock.

  • 1 decade ago

It's not racist for the following reason - 97% of black people voted for a Democratic candidate who happened to be black. You are pretending like they voted for him BECAUSE he is black. The Republican party has always been the party of race-baiting and division. Of course almost all the blacks would vote against a party that is hostile to them and their interests.

    Clinton - 83 then 84 %

    Gore - 90%

    Kerry - 94%

    Obama - 97%

As the Republican party has become more radically conservative, and more overtly racist and has gone to war on the working class, blacks have vote, increasingly, for Democrats.

John Kerry is as white as it gets. Your random grasping at a statistic without looking at the background says more about your own biases about race than anyone else's.

EDIT: You're right, 97% have never voted Democratic before, but 94% have. Now, if you are a historically oppressed minority, and you get a candidate from the same minority group, is it racist to think that 3% more MIGHT, just might, think that this person might be interested in issues that affect that group?

Is that racist for 3% of the population to say "I think this person, moreso than others, might understand issues that concern me" because of similar identity?

Please. Find another straw to grasp at, other than the "I'm a racially oppressed white guy" one.

Edit the Edit: My initial research was flawed. When trying to find documenation to back up on op-ed that listed the numbers, I found others that agreed with each other - looks like the Clinton and Gore numbers are correct, Kerry, however got 88%. HOWEVER, LBJ got 94% against Goldwater in 1964, so the "Dems have gotten 94%" statement is still true. Links below, as requested.

Again, though, I must disagree with your characterization. In past general elections white voters have pretty much always voted at 100% for white candidates, because that's all there was. However, that statistic doesn't mean it's BECAUSE. Also, being in a white dominated society, whites don't ever have the consideration of their concerns or issues not being looked out for based on race. Believe it or not, we're not to the point of societal equality, as some of the race-baiting ugliness is concerned. Think about the old Jim Crowe laws in the south. If blacks back then boted for LBJ because he supported civil rights equality, does that make them racist? Is it racist to say "I'm going to vote for someone who will do their best to make sure I'm not at a disadvantage because of race?"

The same people probably wouldn't vote for Alan Keyes (Obama's conservative black Republican Senate opponent in 2004), so they're not voting for him because he's black, but they might be voting for him because they're confident that he can address issues of race they felt have been getting the short-shrift.

Maybe that's too subtle or nuanced for a forum like YA!, but I think it is a legitimate difference. Okay, end of pontificating and edits for me.

i understand blacks have often constantly voted Democrat... yet you need to confess there's a sprint racism happening while by surprise for the 1st time in historic previous ninety seven% of them truthfully flow to the polls.. and marvel, marvel.. all of them vote black.. Come on.. you need to be an fool to have self assurance that it enhance into all appropriate to the subject concerns.. his stance on well being care and so on and so on. No.. it enhance into entire unadulterated racism.. Why do blacks locate it so hard to admit that. they're very stable at crying racism while that's directed at them.. yet no longer so stable at taking it. i won't be able to assert Obama gained purely through fact he's black.. through fact i think of particularly some people additionally voted for exchange... any style of exchange after Bush. So as a rely of actuality, if he had no longer been black.. and introduced out the black vote.. and if Bush had no longer screwed up so badly.. I doubt Obama could have gained. you are able to wager that if he were a white candidate with so little or no experience he could by no ability have gained. So there you flow!

Because black folks have a long tradition of voting for the Democrat. If Obama had been white, the numbers wouldn't have been a lot different. Stop looking for ways to make black folks seem like racists. Being proud of someone who shares your ethnicity isn't racism. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood. They were the proudest bunch of "racists" I ever met. Enough already.

  • 1 decade ago

Well whether you want to act dumb about it or not, race was an issue. And nobody trusts the Bush family, especially minorites. So when McCain was seen as a Bush clone, everyone flocked to Obama. So even if Obama was green or blue, people wouldve voted for him just because no one wanted another Bush.

If 97% of white people would have voted for McCain, not everyone would be shouting racism.

Just the other 3% and the minority races who voted for Obama.

  • 1 decade ago

Who Cares! The country has spoken. OBAMA is the 44th President of the United States.

Move on and support your president and your country. Unless you know 97% of the black people in America, how can you say they all or the majority of them voted solely on race. Such a small mind!

  • 1 decade ago

It is. But they feel they are in titled because over 100 years ago their ancestors were slaves. I sympathize with the ancestors, but not with the descendants.

So I guess it is OK to vote for a 1/2 black man and call him black.
