How is control exerted in M. Night Shymalan's film the village?

I need help to know how control is put over the citizens over the village...

And yes this is the movie that scary movie 4 makes fun of.

    From what I remember, the parents gain control over the children in the village by making them fear the outside world due to their own bad past experiences in it.

    The adults tell the children if they try to leave, monster from the forest near by will eat them or kidnap them.
