Isn't Obama's new tax plan basically just a return to the old-fashioned tax system where the wealthy pays more?

And if Obama is considered a socialist for doing taxing the wealthy more heavily, doesn't that mean our country has been socialist for many years?

please correct me if i'm wrong, which is very possible.

Update:

by the way, im not saying this negatively. i fully support Obama.

Update 2:

thanks guys for clearing that up for me. ya'll are great!

    Its not even that.

In 2001 Bush and the GOP gave a tax break to the wealthy--but not to any other working Americans. All Obama's tax proposal does is put things back the way they wee before Bush started handing out favors to his wealthy friends.

And yes--by the right-wing's own logic, America has been socialist for decades.

Income tax isn't fair but actually punitive. There should be small government, no income tax but only a "use" tax and individuals need to take more responsibility for themselves. That is not the job for the government! The government doesn't make anything, they only re-distribute and spend - often wastefully!

Obama (and McCain) are big government. Socialism doesn't work very well and all the social programs we currently have and may likely have in the future are pushing us closer to being countries like Canada and Sweden. That is scary.

  • No you are right! That is what Jefferson and Hamilton went at it from the beginning! So isn't that socialism like you said but really it is a nicer way of Communism! So how is this gonna fix our economy again Obama? By writing everyone a welfare check to those that are to lazy to get up and look for a job! Well our country hasn't really been a socialist but that's what obama wants to start which I think should be called unconstitutional because we would start being taxed with really no kind of representation.

Indeed, a half century ago, the White House hosted a GOP President — Dwight D. Eisenhower — who refused to push tax rate cuts for the high-income set. Throughout Ike's Presidency, the top tax rate on income over $400,000 stood at 91 percent. So, I guess that Ike was a communist and Obama just a socialist for raising taxes 4%.to a top rate of 39%.

It's a return to the Clinton years basically, and it is well to the right of the tax system we had for the majority of the twentieth century.

    http://truthandpolitics.org/top-rates.php

For instance, the top tax rate during Eisenhower was 91%!!! on people making, adjusted for inflation, about 4 mil or greater a year. Those people pay 35% now and will pay 39% under Obama.

In 1983, under Reagan, the top tax bracket was 109,000 (about the same as 250,000 now), and then people paid 50%.

Obama's plan is a modification of the system we've been using for many years. The wealthiest have been paying in a higher tax bracket for quite some time.

Obama's plan is nowhere near as radical as some people would have you believe.

    LOL...

I like your style. I just wish the tax code didn't reward people for getting married and having lots of children they can't afford.

    Distribution of wealth (socialism)

We have had many small doses of socialism for many years yes. Looks like the flood doors may be open for it now.

Funny, first Obama said only if you make more than 250k, now he says more than 200k...we will soon all be taxed at a much high rate.

  • Honey I have well over a million dollars in the bank. What do I need a tax cut for. I have nothing to buy that is out of my budget. GOBAMA 2008!!!!!!!
