also what exactly is meant by alternation of generations?

    The goals of meiosis are to produce haploid gametes (either eggs or sperm) that can contain different information.

    Alternation of generations is a process through which plants go, in which they produce a diploid "sporophyte" generation and a haploid "gametophyte" generation.
