He goes back in time to save the life of his girlfriend. So basically he sacrifices himself.

Get the Directors cut, it explains it all. Basically, Donnie had to cause the airplane to fly into the anomaly to save the universe.

the first poster is right, you need to watch it a bunch to understand, and not everyone agrees. please watch the older dvd, not the "deluxe edition" or whatever because it convelutes the movie.
i was going to try and attempt explaining what i thought of the ending, but again i was typing and erasing because it is just very hard to articulate. fate is the common theme. please rewatch as it is such a good movie

it's a really complex and intricate movie...
you'd have to see the movie 5 or 6 times
to understand what's really going on...
it's really hard to explain...
