Using expired Terramycin?

I have some water soluble Terramycin (I think it expired 06) I'd like to use on my rabbits at 1 tsp per gallon to treat diarrhea that I suspect is being caused by an overrun of E. coli. Anyone have any experience using expired antibiotics? I know that it "may not" be effective but wanted some opinions.

Thx!!!

Update:

Yeah, I know better... just being cheap. ;)

I have some Neomycin Sulfate that I just got to use instead.

Update 2:

I've been raising rabbits for show since 1990. Also a Bio/Biochem major. So I know how to safely treat rabbit disease since finding a good rabbit vet is nearly impossible.

Just wasn't sure since the research I've done says "may not" be effective. Toxic is a whole other story!

Has it been kept in the refrigerator? Refrigeration extends the shelf-life. But since its a few years old, the organic compounds within the Terramycin have probably completely decomposed by now, making it mostly ineffective. Even though it probably won't hurt your rabbits, giving them such an ineffective/weak dose might allow the E. coli infection to become resistant (and therefore stronger and the infection becomes worse). My suggestion? Throw out the Terramycin and buy some new antibiotics. Generic drugs are pretty cheap... and you can rest assured that you won't have to deal with bigger problem later.

    Hi,

I work at the Valley Animal Shelter and have to use this stuff to treat infections all the time,

do to the seriousness of being clean, we throw out anything that may be expired, contaminated, or such.

If it was me, I would throw it away and get some more, AND its 2 years old so it may not be as potent.

depending on its chemical composition, it may do more harm than good, kind of like expired tomatoes or cake mix, when it expires, the flour wont fluff up, so like the terramycin it was losts its potency .lol

My best opinion, dont use it

And it not that expensive to buy some more, go to ur vet and ask if you can buy some from them

    I hope this helps

First of all, I would NEVER use a medicine that is more than a month or two past the date for myself as drugs lose their effectiveness and in some cases become toxic! Second of all, having had numerous buns over the years and having five currently, I would NEVER play vet when it comes to something like diarrhea! It isn't necessarily e coli, there are numerous other bacteria and parasites that can cause this. The people I know who have waited on treatment for their buns with diarrhea have lost them to it. Your bun is most likely dehydrated which needs to be treated (probably with subcutaneous fluids) in addition to whatever is causing the diarrhea. Buns with this often have a low temperature and need to be kept warm. Take those buns to a bun-savvy vet so that they will get through this!
