Training a puppy to stop nipping suggestions needed?

I have a 10 week old puppy. I know they need to chew but he tries to bite our feet as we walk around. He latches onto our pant legs and won't let go. He also jumps at and nips our 2 and 4 year old in the face. The kids won't be paying the pup any attention just playing with their toys on the floor or watching tv and he just goes for the face.

Any suggestions for stopping this behavior?

You need to show him what he is not to do. When he gets that excited, don't yell at him. Yelling will get him even more excited. Tell him no and if he doesn't stop, place him on his side and hold him down. Once he is calm then gently pet him and tell him that he is good. If he gets excited again, do the same thing.

Check out these videos and websites from Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer).

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMcBG

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I would respectfully suggest you read a couple of books and watch some videos on raising and training dogs. Watch for the name Cesar Millan, "The Dog Whisperer," who also has a TV show by the same name on the National Geographic Channel; and "It's Me or the Dog," with Victoria Stillwell, on Animal Planet. Both are excellent training programs and often deal with the issues you mention here. Good luck!

Nipping is normal for puppies since that's how they play with each other and it gets to be its worst at about 10-12 weeks.

How you deal with it depends on what your puppy responds to.

If your puppy just plain wants something to chew on (and they NEED stuff to chew on), have chew toys ready and when puppy starts in with the nipping, hand puppy a chew toy and praise lavishly when he starts to chew it.

If he wants attention, withhold it when he is nipping. It could be that this is his idea of a game, and if he gets a response in the form of a hollering human paying attention to him, that's the reward he was looking for. It's hard to get toddlers involved in training puppies but if you can get them to "play statue" when the puppy starts up, it can help teh puppy get frustrated and give up. Just try to reward the puppy when he does what you DO want, like chewing on a toy, playing appropriately etc.

And finally keep in mind that this won't change overnight. Getting a puppy to stop nipping is one of the most frustrating things about puppyhood. It can take weeks and you have to be patient and consistent. But if you don't stick with it you could end up with an adult dog who thinks it's ok to nip and that is 10 times harder to untrain than teaching the puppy in the first place.
