Why do we smile? .?

I've always wanted to know why we smile when we are happy? I don't think it is a learned habit, but something we naturally do. Anyone out there studied this before, or know of research into it?

It takes more muscles to frown than to smile. Maybe it's just the body's way of being relaxed?

we smile because of are teeth. we as members of the ape family smile to hide are canine teeth, letting others in our group know that we are approachable and comfortable, as soon as we feel frightened or threatened we expose are firece canine teeth tho scare off any attackers or to show are despleasure. all animales with canine teeth show thier intentions in the way they expose thier teeth. Apes, monkeys, horses, dogs, lions, all show passive and aggresive emotion by the way they expose thier teeth. have you ever watched aggresive sports the competitors always grit thier teeth and expose thier canines, Mike Tyson is the best example to mind. Thats why animals with big sharp teeth scare us. By the way we have canine teeth not because we are carnivores, but for defence, but thats another story.

all animals have certain gestures or displays they use to communicate their emotions or state of being to conspecifics. humans smiling is the same thing as a dog wagging its tail. it's innate and it's a form of communication.

It 's because the person that you are facing wants to know your feeling.
