What if every American had to commit themselves to 400 hrs of community service in their lifetimes ?
That would equal 50 - 8 hr days.
Of course it wouldn't be mandatory, however if you did complete it, you would get 100% tuition reimbursement from the government. (Which they already give to those who serve in the military)
The community service could be done by joining the army or something as simple as passing out food to the homeless. Do you think that this type of program would be successful?
Philosophically speaking... what do you think?

How about an hour a week? Even if we could get 20% of the people on that level of commitment, we could move mountains.
We can negotiate on the terms. It doesn't need to be reimbursed, we just need to have people agree to pitch in, to do something for the community besides watch TV and eat potato chips.
Start where you are, do what you can, get up tomorrow and do it again.
The real benefit is that by doing that, people would raise their self-esteem. I am reaching for the lyrics from "Alice's Restaurant" here.
I'll get back to you. OK, maybe it's not on point, but the sense of it is still valid.
And the only reason I'm
singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar
situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a
situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both f*ggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

I think this would be completely impractical. If you wanted a college that would cost you $100,000 for 4 years, that would work out to earning $2000 for each day of community service. Unfortunately, the government does not have the money to give everyone $2000 for 8 hours of community service. The program would fail almost instantaneously.

LOVE IT! Not to bring in religion, but when I was young our church had a class for girls and we did volunteer work in nursing homes, sunday school classes, helping the mentally ill in hospitals with christmas gifts and visits, visiting hospitals, etc. It really affected the way I viewed others and helped me find compassion for those who were having a hard time.
In today's time, some churches have become social clubs. It's not about going out to the prisons, community services, etc. It's sad really. But I believe it's exactly what we need in this country.

First off that would be fine by me because I like passing out food and what not. I also think though that on some level if everyone participated then the world would be better off.

Its not slavery if its not mandatory and you get free education for it. If I could get free tuition I would be all over it.

Sounds like slavery. I know this is Obama's plan, but how is this going to help?
