Help with my 1963 Chevy II powerglide transmission?
The shift lever got stuck in park and would not come out, then it finally popped out and shifts in all gears but will not go back into park. Is this something that can be fixed by removing the pan, or does it require removing the tail shaft housing, of transmission completely?
The linkage seems to move to all positions except P, it doesn't actually go all the way, as if something is blocking the linkage inside.

might be fixed by lubing the linkage, have you gotten under there and watched linkage in action. if not you might need to replace clutch packs .way more exspensive. than a shot with a grease gun.

Chevrolet made 2 powerglide transmissions and your '63 may have the cast iron housing or the aluminum housing. That was about the time they changed over. DO NOT REMOVE THE PAN!! Remove the dust cover over the ring gear. The parking pawl engages the same toothed ring your starter engages. You will have to disconnect the drive shaft and remove the cross member that supports the transmission, or support the transmission with a jack and lower it slightly so you can reach up and check the shifting forks. If you have a V-8 or a V-6 (Yes, Chevy had a V-6 in the early 60's), you will want to watch your distributor cap because it gets close to the firewall when you tilt the engine and transmission as an assembly.

it is most likely the parking pawl like the other answer said. he seems to have some knowledge, but in no way does the pawl engage the same ring the starter does. i mean just give it a little thought the ring is attached to the flywheel which turns the whole time the engine is running, and the engine runs while the car is in park. the pawl is in side the transmission

you probably broken the pin that locks your car in park. it happened 2 me on my ford becauseutting the car off the car rolled slightly jamming the car against the pin. the pin on my car luckily was part of the linkage outside of the tranny. 2tyrannyone reading this if parking on a hill or a slant put your parking brake on 2 prevent this problem. it will also keep your parking brake working. if not used the parking brake cables seize up and when they stick they are a pain in the butt. good luck you have a great car. mike

Yeah I believe your linkage on the inside has popped out of position.
If you drop the pan you should be able to put back were it should be.
