If Ottawa happens, will the CFL go with 9 teams or 10? If 10, who is the 10th team?

My gut says they will go with 9, but I think the only viable 10th is Quebec.

I have to think that Quebec (the City) has to be the CFL's backup plan for a 10th team if Ottawa comes through and the Atlantic expansion remains unviable. WIth a 18.5K permanent seat stadium, strong support for football in the community, a metro population of 715K, and a regional population of 1.068M (=Capitale-Nationale population + neighboring Chaudière-Appalaches region population), it seems like all the pieces are there. (The stadium does need some expansion/improvements.)

Update:

colliepoodle - I love the thought of a second Toronto team as a 10th team. If BMO is in fact viable...Not sure if there is end zone space or if the stadium ownership might entertain a CFL team, that would be another possible site option. The Giants and Jets actually not only share the city, they share the same stadium! There is nothing to say the CFL couldn't support 2 teams in the 5.5M pop Toronoto metro area.

Update 2:

My gut feeling is based on a general feel that the old CFL commissioner was pro expansion and the CFL owners are much less so. I think the only reason Ottawa is going to get one is that they committed to it, and frankly, the CFL may have taken some or all of their franchise fee already.

There is interest in Halifax and Quebec among the fans, but not yet amongst potential owners. In all likelihood, whichever city gets a credible owner and a suitable stadium first would get a team. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be happening in the near future.

Great Team! I Would Probably Try To Trade Howard For An Ace On The Mound. Overall 8.5 Out Of 10 Good Luck!

They'll go with 9. When the Renegades were around, Winnipeg moved to the West, and they had nine teams then. Since Ottawa is the only place with a tentative expansion bid, the league's not gonna give another city a team just to have an even number.

Honestly the only possible 10th team I can think of would be a doubling up in a large city (ie: NY Jets and Giants and formerly LA Raiders and Rams).

In Toronto the Argonauts could keep playing at the Rogers Centre and an expansion team could play at the BMO????

Yes, the PEPS Stadium would be the best choice. Football is incredibly popular in Quebec and the team would thrive just as the Alouettes have.

  • they'll go with 9...I'm sorry to say it but Ottawa hasn't sustained a team in the past and I'm not sure if they now. I give it 2 more seasons and we'll be back to 8 teams.

However, I am looking forward to my Cats not being the worst team in the league next year!!

Probably 9 but yeah it would most likely be Quebec City if it was ten they have a huge market like Montreal.
