What is good cold-weather apparel for kayaking?

I am going kayaking in Florida in December. I need to know what would be good, cold water, kayaking gear. I have a spray skirt already, but not much water related gear. I do have some backpacking gear though. Would outer, water resistant shells (like my marmot) that are made for backpacking be as efficient for kayaking? And what about footwear? All I have are some water shoes for summer/spring. Are there any insulated water boots? Thanks!

Update:

I have patagonia base layer that I use for backpacking is that good? I use fleece pants and fleece jacket, and a marmot outer shell to protect against water. Is this good so far?

Sir I am sorry your getting info from others that want to keep you dry! I to live on the gulf coast close to Pensacola and When it is cool out yes by all means do try and stay dry but dress as if you are, be prepared! Wear a surf suit,3mm or better diving booties are good for winter yaking, as is wool. WOOL retains 60-70 of it warming values if/when wet. For me in the winter months my shorty surf suit is all I've needed, when wet will still warm you and with the spray skirt and working the paddle I have seldom gotten cold if so then put on the waterproof parka or just a nylon jacket to shed drops.

Depends on how cold the water is and what conditions you'll be paddling in.

Jackets made specifically for paddling have waterproof seams and closures (often velcro) at the wrists, neck, and waist to keep spray out. Things like pockets and zippers are placed so they're not in the way of your personal floatation device. But a water resistant shell should work ok in calm water. If you're on salt water, make sure to rinse out the gear in fresh water right afterward.

Fleece is great as long as it's not cotton. You may also want to consider something water resistant like rain pants, especially if you happen to be in sit-on-tops. If the water temperature is especially cool (below 60 or so), you may want to consider adding a layer of neoprene, such as a farmer john wetsuit.

For footwear, you could go with your water shoes and add some fleece or neoprene socks. Or for more insulation get some neoprene dive booties (though they can be bulky if you have big feet).

Also bring along a fleece hat or neoprene hood for a little extra warmth.

You have many options, Water and air temperatures need be considered. A wet suit is the usual choice. A dry suit is better. Never wear cotton or wool. They soak up water. Where are you going to paddle? Wait until you get there and learn what the locals are wearing. Try the Ron-Jon shop in Cocoa Beach.

you need water proof gear coat pants shoes and under than you need to wear wool or fleece because either of those keep you warm even when they are wet
