I don't get it. If someone steals my Visa Card.....?
and orders a something online, can't the cops just go to the address they sent it too?I don't understand why it would be so hard to track someone down with my identity?
Or do they have tricks up their sleaves?
How often do they get caught?
What happened to me is they bought a gift card that they printed off on their computer and then went on a 5000 shopping spree.
The store said they don't have names with the gift cards and the cops said the guy/girl was using a proxy server. Anyone know of any other way to find out the tool that did this to me?!
Thank you for all your concern! They bought the gift card online, printed it out and then used it at THEIR local store which happened to be in Utah. It was a Cabelas.
So now all I know is that someone shopped with a gift card in utah bought be me and I don't know where else to go.

When the credit card company reimbursed you for a fraudulent charge, it is no longer your concern. The credit card company has to have the matter investigated and once they have the proof that they need. Then and only then can they press charges. They have to choose their steps wisely and not falsely accuse someone of making false charges. That in its self is a charge and the damages are in the thousands.

Have you filed a police report? Get to know your case officer and don't let up if the department gives you the run-around (which they will). Let them know you have evidence an item charged to your card was purchased and delivered to an address. Contact the company the item was purchased from and find out the address. You have every right to get this information. Get the tracking/shipping number and ask the delivery courier service what address it was dropped off at and if a signature was required on delivery. You may be able to get a witness. Give this solid information to the police and make sure you hear back from them about this lead. It's not hard at all for them - you have to let them know your case is worth being solved.
*Since ID theft is so common, the majority of cases go unsolved unfortunatly. I was lucky in that the bonehead spent $2000 all at local stores and was dumb enough to set up a return appointment at one of them.
Wow, stores/sites allowing insanely large gift card purchases that you PRINT out screams for fraud. Jeez! I'm sorry for you that your credit is now red-flagged and damaged because of this. If they did the gift card and bought the stuff online, it HAD to go somewhere, right? A physical address is far more promising than a digital address. No matter what, the gift card should be tracked for when it was cashed for merchandise. And the merchandise will have a trail.
Definitely complain to the company/website that issued it so hopefully they can institute some better ID verification!
**Most criminals aren't that smart and I hope they'll make a mistake and get caught for it soon. This kind of fraud seems to work well for them (so far) and it will happen again w/ someone elses #. If the police can connect your case and bust the morons, I'm sure that will be 1 happy phone call.

OUCH! but,I have never seen a gift card for that amount of money!! They must have done all this online, so they didn't have to show their faces and proper ID! Oh you poor baby! If anything was actually MAILED to an address, you can find out from neighbors if these people are renting or buying the property! If they ae renters, their Landlord can give you their names, same thing with a property owner, the city can give you that information too! But in order to get this gift card, they would have to use YOUR stolen card in order to do so. There is a "paper" trail on that, for instance, YOUR bank statement! And get a hold of the companies they bought stuff from, for the perps telephone number and e-mail address, cos they definately wouldn't know yours! I hope you closed that Credit Card down as soon as you found out!

Unfortunately, a lot of times that this sort of thing happens, the perpetrators are never found, much less prosecuted. All you can do is talk to the credit card company that issued the card that the thieves fraudulently used. If you notify them quickly enough, you probably won't have to pay the charges, or you may have to pay only a small figure like $50.00.
Yes, these people have tricks up their sleeves.
