Nikon D40 -does anyone have an opinion?

For a beginner is this an appropriate camera does it have manual and automatic focus

    Yus, to all of your questions. I don't have it personally, but it's a good entry level camera. Get it with the kit lens.

    sadly this is badge engineering at its worst. the camera is severely limited in what it can do. althought it says nikon... and it takes pictures, thats where the similarity ends.

    the cheapest decent Nikon is the D80... its not a toy made for the amatuer snapper.

    personally, (for half the price) buy an Olympus E500. the olympus meter is FAR better, the glass is good, and they dont break.. mine is 3yrs old, and has around 50000 shots on it. look on ebay, you wont find one spares or repairs, unlike cannons sony, panasonic or other lower end makes.
