Networking question...?
We have three computers, one laptop and 2 desktop computers. We have all three hooked up to a network. One desktop is our main computer. It runs Windows XP. Our other desktop and the laptop are new. They run Vista (that's what they came with-yuck!). Although both the new ones say they are connected to the network we don't know how to set them so that they can access the main computer.
What I mean is, we have music and movies and pictures on our main computer that we would like the other computers to be able to access. How do we do that?
WE GOT IT FIXED. THANKS GUYS FOR ALL YOUR ANSWERS. I LEFT IT TO MY HUBBY TO READ YOUR ANSWERS AND FIX THE PROBLEM. I'M NOT SURE WHAT HE TRIED BUT IT WORKED, SO THANKS ALL!!!

This will be tricky. First you need to make sure that all of the computers are in the same workgroup.
Then you have to make sure that the files and folders are shared on the XP machine.
Then you have to go to the Network and Sharing center on the Vista machines and make sure that everything in there is set so that sharing of files and folders and printers is on.
Finally you have to go to Start>Run and type in //[desktop computer name] and it should open a window that shows everything that is shared on the XP machine.

Sharing XP to Vista should be relatively easy...but the other way around can get more challenging...
When I did this, I just ran the XP network setup wizard to enable sharing (remember the computer name). Then, on the Vista laptop(s) you can click start and type \\computername and should see the desktop's shared files.

The basic question is: How are you trying to connect? Do you have Wires or is it wireless, as you can configure both of these options in both the OSs.
If you are connecting wires to set up a network, make a peer-to-peer network and share the relevant drives/folders which contain files and in the security tab, give the folder permission as Everyone-Full Control.
Do not worry, this means the other systems can just read your files but cannot do anything else. For taking remote control, you can configure that in gpedit.msc, but that is a totally different story altogether.

Doesn't Windows have a file sharing capability built in to allow you to do this? I know they added this on to windows with XP. Look under the network settings in control panel.

First of all sure that your 3 computers are connected to networking HUB and they have assigned the same workgroup name.after that enable file and print shairing on these computers.they should have different ip address but class should be same.
