A question, A Mushroom?

I found these mushrooms just recently(in western MI), they were completely green, grew in sand, and when I broke them open seemed to be filled with gel, what are they?

Possibly not a mushroom, but a ciliate. See if this looks like what you found: http://www.bio.umass.edu/biology/conn.river/ophryd...

These balls are a groups of colonial organisms that surround themselves with a jelly-like coating and form colonies. They were pretty common in lakes where I'm from this summer and fall, and lots of people were asking about them.
