Let's keep focused on the idea that piracy is not terrorism.

Terrorism has the aim of undermining a government's ability to govern.

Piracy is highway robbery on the high seas.

There are not enough ships in the navies of the US, NATO, and other law fearing nations to police all the areas where there is piracy, particularly off shores where they are not welcome as is the case in Somalia.

Further the ships are mostly registered in nations other than the US. Often they are registered in land locked countries. This is done to avoid paying the taxes needed to support policing.

When this was a problem a few years back in Indonesia, ships started carrying a protection force of mercenaries on board. That would probably be an effective solution off Somalia too.

It's a bi of a strange situation this on.

Here you have a foreign registered ship which is carrying armaments supplied by one cuntry bound for who knows where.

The international community are in attendance there but are presently at a stand off.

Either they fear for the safety of the lives of the crew

Or they are aware that the ship is in international waters and do not want encroach on sovereign rights.

Or perhapss the country that sent the armaments is applying pressure for the internatioal forces not to board the ship as they have something on board that they want to hide.

Unfortunately, most Americans believe that G.W. Bush is the author of all terrorism. Now that America has a new president, a very liberal democrat, the Americans who voted him in will remove the word "terrorism" from their vocabularies.

Also, there are many who are aware of what is going on there... but it is a difficult road to walk. At least where America is concerned. If we go in and try to help, we will be accused of trying to be the world's police.. yet, if we do nothing, we will be accused of being aloof and uncaring about the world's suffering.

I am sure there are those who would like to help somehow... but it all boils down to what the government will decide to do. It is definitely a tragedy. And we are getting reports of what is going on there.

i don't know but i would do what Roman Abramovich has done and armed his new mega yacht with all manner of toys, like a mini sub, and more arsenal than most small dictatorships have and blow the bstards out of the water at the first hint of, hand over your good.....

many countires don't do anything about them simply because the somalians once captured are claiming asylum so you could end up having to put them up in your country.

According to this story, the RN is already doing something about Pirates of the Somalian kind.

There's probably as much piracy now as there was back in the 17th and 18th centuries, but like you say, no one is doing anything much about it.

I'm wondering to myself what is my UK.gov doing with my tax money? We've got the world's second largest navy, the Royal Navy and one of it's jobs is to destroy pirates at sea or arrest them and bring them to trial.

Right now the RN is pre-occupied dealing with drug runners of the South American coast. A big push is going on to stem the tide of drugs reaching UK shores.

Piracy on the high seas, unless it is deal with and I mean hard, just goes on getting worse.

Two main seagoing areas with lots of piracy now are the South China sea and along the coastline of Somalia.

Time to blow them up - this is not Treasure Island this is murder on the high seas.

I do not think we should ponce about any more with these pirates. Once captured, the pirate crew should be held in cages and their boats and ships blow out of the water.

Just do it and lets have a co-ordinated effort. I'm hearing that NGOs are having their vital relief cargoes snatched by these bastards.

I also want to know just how much of this pirate money ends up in the pockets of corrupt politicians in Somalia and elsewhere. Put them on trial as pirate admirals if necessary. Charge them with murder etc.

Most of us are landlubbers...piracy on the high seas doesn't affect us as much as bomb blasts do... its sad but true that what doesn't affect us, we ignore. Its time piracy was recognised for the terror it is.

UK sent 2 destroyers last week.
