Is there a silver lining in the proposition 8 vote?

Let me start by saying I was immensely saddened and disgusted with the passage of this proposition and am very hopeful it can be overturned. However, for the first time I have seen masses take to the street and protest on behalf of equal rights for GLBT citizens. I was born in the 50's and still remember seeing the civil rights protests on behalf of black Americans which took place in the '60's. That kind of emotion has been lacking in the coverage of the efforts for equal rights in recent years.

Are we, gay and straight finally willing to take to the streets for this very just cause? If the proposition 8 vote served as this needed catalyst then perhaps there is indeed a silver lining in this tragic outcome. Am I way off base here?

Off base, no not at all...I dont' think that's possible with you!

I do see where you are coming from and Toffee, I wish I could tell you how angry the Prop 8 made me. How I want to take to the streets for every gay person wronged, for the stupidity and the lack of knowledge people had when voting for Prop 8..

So to answer your question, yes, there might be a silver lining. I think the gay community needs to be heard, loud and proud.

I think it has made us aware of what we need to do and how we need to get the word out for our cause. You're right, there. through all the awfullness, it's really grand to see so many people standing up and saying "NO. this is wrong and we will not let it stand." I'm glad to see something like this in my life time.

And here people were saying youngfolks don't care. xp

still, I wish that we didnt have to do this at all and that everyone could just see reason and let us marry.

Non-religious motives i'm balloting confident on 8: Prop 8 isn't meant to discriminate against homosexuals. that's meant to maintain classic marriage. Gays are entitled to the comparable rights as married couples with the aid of kinfolk partnerships. They get carry of tax breaks, well being advantages, etc, purely like married couples. Legalized gay marriage potential pastors and clergy who refuse to marry comparable intercourse couples can and could be sued under the regulation. This has already passed off many circumstances in Massachusetts and Connecticut the place gay marriage is criminal. additionally, faculties and instructors would be pressured to tutor comparable intercourse marriage as ethical and criminal. it is occurring suitable now in Massachusetts the place user-friendly college infants are given books like “King & King”, a fairy tale approximately 2 princes falling in love and “Who’s in a kinfolk”, a e book that shows comparable intercourse mothers and dads alongside with different varieties of families. purely like our infants shouldn't study to settle for Jesus in college, they shouldn't study gay marriage as ethical in college. those discussions might desire to in elementary terms ensue interior the domicile between make certain and baby, or between student and student, no longer instructor to student. There you have it. NON-religious motives to help prop 8!!!

The silver lining for me: In 2000, 63% of CA voted against gay marriage. In 2008, only 52% voted against it. We're getting closer. There is hope.

yeah, except I think it's about time to overturn those affirmative action laws for blacks if they're to the point where they feel like they can discriminate against other minorities.
