Just because of the fact that you are multiplying the variable

Because you are multiplying, you must multiply both the constant and the variable.
2a(4a)=8a^2

yes it is 8a because your variable (a) doesnt change so your simply left with 2x4 which = 8 then you put your variable(a) back in and you have 8a
