Might have something to do with the people who originally wore leather, and what it was for. Leather was originally a form of armor. It made you almost invincible. Also the WWII pilots who wore leather bomber jackets. Dropping the big one is the ultimate form of combat. Then after that, you had the biker gangs (started FROM those same pilots) who wore the leather. So it's a sign of invincibility, and is intimidating.
