Lights on a streetfighter project?
I am nearing the end of my first streetfighter project. A bandit frame heavily modified with an r6 sub-frame. Ex-up ru front end and gsxr750 swing arm. I want to know what the law is regarding whether i need to fit indicators if i don't have a switch for them. Also does my light switch have to be up at the handlebar as i would like to fit individual switches on the side of the bike. Do i need a brake light if i am going for a daytime mot? This is something i might think about.

All lights must operate as origanally installed. If your bike came from the factory with signals or was produced after 1970 it must have Turn signals with an indicator light visable to the rider.Tail light ,Brake light.Headlight Hi /low beam with a high beam indicator light visable to the rider.Horn ,and kill switch mounted on the handel bars.

Camel is right
you don't need any lights at all for a dawn to dusk MOT
with regards to fitted or not
They must either be removed or totally covered.
however
ALL must have a reflector of the right size
if ANY glass or part of the light is shown it must work
so no brake lights not tail lights no headlight indicators nowt
you must have a horn and all mechanicals must work
BUT get caught after sun down or before sun rise
and you'll be buggered
for those who still don't believe check out the construction and use regulations

in regards to the indicators, it depends on the age of the bike, not sure how old they need to be though, an mot place would advise better on this. as for the brake light you will need that to be working whether you take it for mot in the day or at night as it has to be seen to be working in the day by other road users to prevent them shunting you up the *** when you stop, as long as your lights work, im sure you can put the switches where you like.

go and speak to your mot man, you can go for daytime use with just a brake light if i remember right but no switch gear must be on the bike unless it works some lights.
id just wire it up with proper lights!
sounds like one hell of a machine.

You are required to fit indicators, if the original bike was manufactured after 1986.
The headlight on / off switch can be wherever you like.
The main / dip switch must be "easily accessible whilst operating the motorcycle".
All motorcycles require a brake light, by law.

Yes you will nead indicators, all bikes after 1984 have to. u can put the light switches anywhere, your horn neads to be on the bars. and for daytime only you will nead a breaklight. both on front and rear brake.

I don't think the turn signals are required so long as you use proper hand signals. The brake light is required. But why would you even consider not having a brake light? Defensive driving can help you avoid some of the pitfalls created by other drivers but the greatest vulnerability to a MC rider is the guy coming up behind you. When you have to slow or stop the only defense you have against the guy behind you is your brake light.

indicators: its legal not to have them providing the original switch is removed from the switchgear.
Brake light is not needed but advised. you must however fit a rear red reflector.
A horn is required.
Your switches can be wherever you want them to be.
Golden rule of thumb is : if fitted, must work.
