Which is more evil, SMERSH or SPECTRE?

-At first, I was going to say SPECTRE, because they killed James Bond's wife. But then I remembered 'Diamonds are Forever'; when Blofield started cloning himself for no apparent reason then he built a satellite with a bunch of diamonds after he kidnapped some actor? Very cornball.

I really liked SPECTRE in Thunderball; they were very mysterious and evil. But like watching paint dry, it took too long and it put me right to sleep.

-Whereas SMERSH has always been evil. They have never killed loved ones, but they've never done cheezy stuff either. They were evil on an even level; not jumping around between super-evil out to Dr-evil.

Yea, I pick SMERSH. So they're in the new movie, eh? Neat.

Both are 007 take-over-the-world organizations, but which do you think was more nefarious? (Although I hear SMERSH is called Quantum in the new movie)

In the books, SMERSH is a secret service group in Russia. Its acronym stands for Smiert Shpoinam meaning Death to Spies. In the first novel "Casino Royale", a SMERSH agent carves the spy symbol on 007's hand when he has been tied and tortured by Le Chiffre. After that, 007 declares war on this Russian group and deals it many heavy blows. Later, with the Cold War melting, Ian Fleming decided to stop villainizing Russians and invent a new super criminal organization surely influenced by previous ones, e.g. those of Professor Moriarty the Napoleon of crime, Fu Manchu and Karl Peterson. Ernst Stavro Blofeld is nearly as indestructible as his predecessors. SPECTRE is much more evil than SMERSH whose concern was with foreign spies as enemies of the state, not taking over the world. Both groups are ruthless, but the Russian group is patriotic, while SPECTRE hates all nations.
