My father just ran over a dog with his car?
About an hour ago, my father and I were driving through a neighborhood. He didn't notice that a small dog was crossing the street and when he did he swerved the car to the left, but the left back tire went over the dog and we felt it. I was bawling when this happened and I only tuned back once and saw the dog on the far right of the road, with his leg twitiching. My father stopped the car and apologized to the owners who saw everything while I was bawling. My friends who were in the car say that there was blood on the floor. I didn't turn around again, and my father got back in the car and drived away. I told him to go back and do something but he said there was nothing to do.
Right now, I feel horrible. I was wondering if the dog could have survived, because when I turned around his leg was twitiching/moving. and his head was intact. Please, be honest. I can't go to sleep not knowing what happened to the poor dog, and my parents refuse to drive back that neighborhood to check on the dog.
Do you think he's still alive?

possibly he could have been alive but with damages, they probably had to put him down.

I always remember when I was a really little kid (about 5ish) my father ran over a puppy. There was nothing he could do to avoid it as he was towing a caravan at the time and couldn't risk the lives of the whole family.
Anyway, my father pulled over and went back and checked the puppy but it was dead. I can't remember much else than that but I do still remember it to this day, some 40 years later.
Don't blame your father, these things happen. He didn't leave the dog lying on the side of the road to die - the owners were there to take care of it. It certainly wasn't his fault because the owners should have made sure that the dog wasn't anywhere near the road to be in such danger. I am sure that your father is feeling just as bad as you are - dads don't say much when it comes to the emotional stuff, but they feel it.
You have to let it go - it was one of those things that we hate to happen, but they do.

Bonnie is entitled to her opinion, as distorted as it is. The owners are responsible for their animals, not your Dad. If he did go back it should have been just to run it over again just to be sure he finishes the job. The dog is probably dead, but its for the better, the leg twitching was probably just nerves. It's not even your dad's fault, it's the responsibility of the owners, in essence they are the ones who killed their dog. It should have been on a leash or in a fenced in yard. Your Dad is absolutely right that there was nothing to do, let the owners take care of the dog, like they should have done in the first place.

I'm sorry you had to go thru that.
The answer I am about to give you is probably not something you want to hear, but if the dog is lucky, it has passed on. It's so hard to watch an animal suffer. So hope that it's not in pain.
It was a terrible accident but this happens. If you want someone to blame, the owners should NEVER have let their dog so close to the road.
Your father did the responsible thing. Give him a break, no one WANTS to hit an animal. I commend him for stopping. But honestly, what would you expect him to do for the animal? It's not his responsibility, it's the owners responsibility.
I hope you have peace about this soon so you can go to bed. Wishing you the best . . .

That's so sad.
You said his leg was twitching. They might have had to amputate the leg, but since this is expensive, they might have also put the dog down to put it out of it's misery. I'd go to the neighbors and ask them. If they had to put the dog down, just talk to them. They'll tell you about how he had a good life, and if he's alive, they might let you go see him. There is a chance the dog survived- don't give up hope!

Theres no way to tell, but his owners know hes hurt, so I am sure they'll take care of him. He could be ok and escape with a broken bone or some cuts, or he could bleed internally. The owners need to A) get treatment or B) have him put to sleep. They are not going to sit around and watch their dog suffer. Its sad and I am so sorry you had to see that, but its not your dads fault that they didn't put him on a leash or behind a fence.

Most likely not, I'm so sorry that must be horrible and that you parents won't drive back. It depends where he got run over. If his limbs got run over, then he'll live, if his middle got run over, then not unless the owners took him to the vet. Here, this will help his chances:
Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
Thsi always helps with my dog (they're epyleptic) so it might help the poor dog. It's the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi. So sorry!

Well, It depends if the owners took it to the vet, and it was taken care of straight away. I could answer the question better if i knew where the dog got hit.
I feel sorry for you!!

I'm sorry you feel so bad, but there's not really any way to tell what happened unless you talk to the owners. Since your parents won't drive you back, maybe you can call them if you know their name and it's in the phone book.

The dog might still be alive, and if he is, he's probably in terrible pain. You hit a dog, it's your responsibility, even if it's out in the road. An apology won't cut it. Your Dad is a jerk for not going back. I feel sorry for you.

well let me tell you what happened to my dog who got ran over by a teenage driver who swerved too closed to my driveway and hit my dog who was standing at the end of my driveway. Her eye popped out and she had internal damage. They didn't take my dog to the vet, she was put to sleep (my parent took her to the shelter) She was in too much pain, there's nothing we can do. I don't even know if the person who ran over my dog even apologize. I was at school at the time. I cried my eyes out. It was the worst thing ever happen.
To answer your last question, no.
