The highest position within the House of Commons prior to the first historically recognised "Prime Minister" (Robert Walpole in 1720) was that of Lord High Treasurer.

He was often referred to as "First Minister" or just "The Minister". The term "Prime Minister" was actually a mocking term of abuse. The PM's full title is First Lord of the Treasury, but the derogatory epithet was so often used that it somehow stuck.
