What is Laleli in Istanbul like?

I'm thinking of staying at a hotel in the Laleli neighborhood in Istanbul in April, and some reviews have said the area isn't a good one for a woman walking alone after 6:00PM. What do you think? Thanks!

Update:

The hotel I'm considering is the Merit Antique Istanbul,

Ordu Cad # 226 in Laleli.

It really depends on where you stay in Laleli, because although there are very cheap hotels, brothel-like bars, recently very good hotels have been opened there as well. It is mainly a very commercial area, so the majority of the shops close at around 19-20:00 pm and some streets can be very dark. But at some parts, life goes on. Actually, the area is getting very popular with the tourists apart from Russians. Very close to the main touristic attractions.

On the streets, they may think you are a Russian, they may try to talk to you but there wouldn't be physical harassment. If your hotel is not close to the main street, and you are coming back late, just take a taxi.

I can understand other Turkish people having reservations about the place because for many years it was off limits for us. And we don't live there, the life in Istanbul goes around Taksim Square. The old center is just for visiting.

Still,if you tell the name of the hotel, I can help you better.

Don't worry, enjoy your time here !

A very good, recently renovated 5 star hotel. Just at the main street.

But if you want a more central place, I'd recommend you somewhere at the Taksim area. For example: The Marmara. The cost would be nearly the same. And this part of the city is alive with people until morning. You can easily go to the old part to visit museums and come back in the afternoon and still, there are places you can enjoy the evening at this part.

Source(s): I am a tour guide, I go to that area very frequently to pick up my people. But myself, I live in the modern part, too:))))

Laleli is a business area, but at night, it changes into a prostitution area. It is not dangerous after 6 o'clock, but can be after 8 PM when the businesses are closed.

Tho the number of ex Soviet prostitution is greatly reduced recently, I would still not recommend Laleli for staying purposes.

Well, the reviews are unfortunately correct. There are a lot of street walkers- mostly form ex-Russian countries- in that area at night and you may be bothered by some men who mistakes you as one.

As a Turk, I wouldn't recommend a woman to stay there if you are planning to go out at night.
