What's Your Favorite Japanese Castle?
Please say which castles you have visited and then say what your favorite one was. (I think it's helpful to say where you've been just to keep the choices in perspective)
I need to go to more castles. I've only been to Okayama Castle and Iga Ueno Castle (I've technically seen Himeji Castle, Osaka Castle, and Hiroshima Castle, but I didn't "go there", so I won't count them.) Out of those two, Okayama Castle is better by far. Although it's mostly fake, there is one turret left from the original. I do plan to go to Himeji and maybe some others to see a real castle...
Anyways, which is your favorite?
*Oh, actually, I did go to Nijo Castle. It was my favorite. haha. It's real.

My favorites would be:
Matsumoto-Jo in Nagano. Black castle well preserved surrounded by mountains in the distance. Great place to see if it's snowing!
Himeji-jo - beautiful outside and inside especially around the cherry blossom season
Inuyama-jo - the oldest preserved castle in Japan sitting above the river like an old robber baron castle on the Rhine River in Germany
Hikone-jo - is another well preserved castle with the exception of the staircases. Behind the keep are dozens of cherry trees and behind them is Lake Biwa making for a great view outside the castle.
All of them are fairly original which is a rarity with castles in Japan.

My Mum & Dad had their first kiss in the park beside Yoshida caslte which is in Toyohashi. It's such a romantic place! So that's gotta be their fave castle.
I like the Osaka Castle, & also Kakegawa. Himeji Castle looks good but I've only seen it from the bullet train. One day I want to go see the Matsumoto Castle. That's the black one in Nagano. They call it the "CROW" castle coz it's black. One day I'll get to see it I hope!

I like Matsumoto-it's authentic and has a great firearms collection. Aizu is a reproduction, the original was destroyed in the Boshin war but the setting is great and the kendo dojo beside it is original. Aizu has a great collection of period photographs of the real "Last Samurai". The remains of Hakodate castle are interesting in that it was a citadel.

I experienced Himeji best. It is huge and real. It is definitely must see thing. It seems the castle is under re-construction till 2014 so that you may fail perfect appearance for picture but it still opens to public so that you can visit there to see inside as usual.
One of smaller castle if I choose, it could be Hirosaki castle because It is neat to look around in short time and still very beautiful particularly in cherry blossom season.

Been to:
Nijo-jo: More a resort than a fortress. Has the "Nightingale Floor." Nice
Nagoya-jo: Interesting "anti-ninja" defenses.
Osaka-jo: Very average and has a genuine Edo-period elevator in the center. Booo!
Edo-Jo: Well, we weren't allowed inside, but the outside was ok.
Gifu-jo: Hands down, The best one I've ever seen. Way up in the mountains.
Himeji-jo: Yeah, it's beautiful. But it's everybody's favourite.
So, Gifu-jo it is.
Want to see:
Matsumoto-jo: It looks beautiful with that lake and bridge and everything.
Wakayama-jo: But it's in the middle of nowhere.

Himeji is the best in Japan, hands down.
But Nijo Castle has one of the best gardens you will ever see.

And Hikone has the best cherry blossoms without the crowds.

My favorite one is Kakegawa castle in Shizuoka Pref. Many films are being filmed there too.
